Amelia reached over and gently ruffled Dennis’s hair. Her voice was soft and steady. “Hey, Dennis, it’s okay. I’m right here.”
Dennis slipped out of Ethan’s arms and buried himself in Amelia’s embrace. His voice was shaky. “Auntie, what do we do now? Grandpa still yelled at me. He’s still mad. Nothing worked…”
Amelia just held him close, her lips pressed together as she looked over at Ethan. Their eyes met, and Ethan silently asked her what to do next.
Amelia only shook her head, and Ethan lowered his gaze, keeping quiet.
Her mind was heavy. She’d gotten it wrong this time. She really thought putting on that whole scene would finally get Kevin to give in, or at least make him reconsider, if only for Dennis’s sake. But Kevin was as stubborn as ever. When she’d tried to talk to him just now, he hadn’t budged at all.
She kept her eyes low, still gently rubbing Dennis’s head, feeling a sinking weight in her chest. The plan had gone off just as she’d wanted, but the result was not what she hoped for.
Now what? She really didn’t know. Her thoughts were all over the place. She couldn’t think of any new way to get Kevin to agree.
Still, something had to change. They couldn’t just keep going like this.
Amelia gave Dennis’s back a soft pat. “Dennis, it’s time to stop crying, okay? I need you to listen to me.”
Sniffling, Dennis pulled away and wiped his eyes, looking up at her. “Auntie…?”
She kept her voice gentle. “Dennis, once you calm down, I want you to go apologize to Grandpa. Talk to him. I know we both understand what really happened last night, but Grandpa doesn’t. He was scared. You need to go and make him feel better. Promise me you won’t say anything to upset him again, alright?”
Dennis pouted, his voice small and unhappy. “But… but Grandpa said all those things to me. He doesn’t even want to help…”
