Samuel Walker’s face went even paler, panic tightening his features. “I—I…”
Emily Blair’s voice was icy. “Do you realize what you’ve done? Vertex International has a top-tier legal team. You won’t just be paying damages—you’ll be facing jail time.”
“No!”
Samuel’s head snapped up, eyes wide. “Ms. Blair, I had no choice. I swear, I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
Emily nodded coolly. “Go on, then—what was your reason?”
It was as if Samuel had found a lifeline. His words tumbled out, desperate and shaky. “Ms. Blair, my family has a hereditary illness. My father and grandfather—they both have stomach cancer. The medical bills are enormous, I can’t cover them. We’ve already sold our house and our car. There’s nothing left. That’s why, that’s the only reason I did what Ryan Cox asked. I didn’t want to, but I had no other choice.”
“I swear, I never meant any harm.”
His eyes reddened as he stumbled forward, nearly collapsing at Emily’s feet.
“Ms. Blair, I know I was wrong, but please—please don’t turn me in. I’m the only one left who can support my family. If I go to prison, there’s no one left to pay for their treatment. They’ll die. I’m begging you, Ms. Blair, please—I’ll do anything. Just don’t report me, I’m begging you.”
Finally, Samuel dropped to his knees, gaunt cheeks streaked with tears, his whole body trembling. He looked as though he might faint at any second.
Emily looked on, unmoved. “Your family’s troubles have nothing to do with me. You damaged the company, and turning you in is my duty.”
Samuel’s voice rose, his face ashen. “No, please, Ms. Blair—please, I’ll work for you for free! I’ll do anything, just don’t have me arrested!”
Emily turned her gaze away, her annoyance barely concealed.
“Anything?”
Samuel nodded again, desperate. “Yes, anything.”
Emily leaned down, meeting his gaze, a slow, unsettling smile curving her lips.
“Good.”
Meanwhile, Lucas Cox was having a terrible week. For reasons unknown, his old man had been haunting the branch office every day, never going home—and to make matters worse, had taken over Lucas’s own office. Lucas couldn’t even return to the room he’d worked in for years.
To top it all off, earlier that day, Ryan Cox had chewed him out in front of the entire staff. Humiliated, Lucas still had to grit his teeth and bow his head, pretending to be respectful.
