The man stood with his back to Emily Blair, his face hidden, but his broad, rugged frame was unmistakable.
Emily paused about fifteen feet behind him.
She recognized that silhouette.
Benjamin Gomez.
Standing behind him, Emily could clearly see the smug satisfaction on Ryan Cox’s face and the nervous tension in the audit team.
Ryan Cox grinned, “Everyone, I believe Mr. Gomez knows your director—come on, don’t be so shy, say hello.”
The woman leading the group looked surprised. “Mr. Gomez, is there something we can help you with?”
Benjamin Gomez picked up a stack of documents, glanced through them, and asked offhandedly, “What are you checking here?”
The woman shot a wary glance in Emily’s direction before replying carefully, “We received a tip that Mr. Cox had misappropriated funds and stolen proprietary information. We’re still investigating—no conclusions yet.”
She was quick to read the room. Benjamin Gomez’s sudden appearance and imposing presence made it clear he was here to back Ryan Cox.
Just a moment ago, she’d addressed Ryan by his full name. Now, it was “Mr. Cox.”
Before Benjamin could respond, Ryan let out a cold chuckle. “Funny—I thought I just heard you say you’d already determined I stole company secrets?”
Benjamin stayed silent.
Unsure where he stood, the woman lowered her voice, almost apologetic. “We misspoke. We’ll be more thorough with our review. Please, Mr. Cox, don’t take offense.”
Ryan’s tone turned stern. “You need to take your work seriously. You can’t be this careless—what if you end up accusing the wrong person?”
The woman forced a smile, taking in a deep breath. “You’re absolutely right.”
Ryan, now satisfied, turned to Benjamin. “Mr. Gomez, what do you think?”
His meaning was clear: he wanted Benjamin to send the audit team away.
But Benjamin suddenly asked, “Where’s Emily Blair?”
