Benjamin Gomez slid into the car, his reflection in the rearview mirror cold and inscrutable. “What is it?” he asked, his voice even.
Ryan Cox spat out his words through clenched teeth. “Someone reported me. Now the Compliance Bureau is here, crawling all over my department. I know you have connections there—make some calls, get them to back off. Now.”
Benjamin closed his eyes, irritation shadowing his brow.
The more frantic Ryan’s voice became, the more Benjamin wanted to tune him out. “What exactly did they report you for?” he asked, forcing himself to listen.
Ryan fell silent for a moment, then snapped, sharper than before. “Embezzlement, or something like that. Look, just do it. If you don’t, it’ll be too late.”
He didn’t want to help.
Benjamin’s face remained impassive as the thought flickered through his mind.
But he didn’t have a choice.
Ryan spoke again, rushing to remind him, “Don’t forget who helped your mother get out of the country all those years ago. Without me, you wouldn’t be where you are.”
“My mom always said she owed me. Did you conveniently forget that? You owe me, Benjamin.”
Benjamin felt frustration coil in his chest.
He tamped down his annoyance and asked, “Who reported you?”
Ryan’s answer was a low growl. “Who else? Lucas Cox, obviously.”
Benjamin barely cared about his half-brother—Lucas had never mattered to him.
Getting the Compliance Bureau to drop the case wouldn’t be hard.
He was about to agree when Ryan added, “There’s another one, too. Some woman named Emily Blair. Damn it, one of these days I’ll ruin her. She’s always out to get me.”
Benjamin’s eyes snapped open. “Who did you say?”
“Emily Blair. CEO of Vertex International. You’ve heard of her, right?”
Emily Blair.
Benjamin silently repeated the name, turning it over in his mind.
