My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 623

Tristan clenched his jaw. “Then hurry up and go.”

Emily blinked. “What?”

Suddenly, Andrew’s deep voice cut in, “Who are you talking to?”

There was no question—his words carried clearly over the phone.

On the other end, Tristan sounded like he was about to explode. “Emily, I said go. Now.”

Emily had no desire to prolong her conversation with Andrew, so she replied carelessly, “Did you need something?”

Tristan fell silent.

Andrew glanced at her phone, then back at her, saying nothing. There were times Emily wondered if he even knew how to speak.

After a long, heavy pause, Andrew finally said, “Ryan Cox isn't getting out of this one.”

Ryan Cox.

Emily wasn’t sure what angle Andrew was coming from by bringing him up.

Remembering everything Andrew had done, Emily’s lips curled into a faint, half-mocking smile. “I know.”

She looked at Andrew, her tone calm and almost amused. “So, are you here to accuse me of something, Mr. Lane?”

Andrew met her gaze. “Is that what you think?”

She shot back, “Isn’t it?”

He’d tried to block her every step of the way. Andrew seemed determined to stand in her way, to protect Ryan Cox at all costs. Now that Ryan had finally been caught, she figured Andrew must be furious with her.

Andrew said nothing, his silence heavy in the air.

Truth be told, Emily herself was surprised at how things had played out.

The Lane family’s influence stretched far and wide. Once she’d learned that Kevin and Andrew were determined to shield Ryan, she’d pretty much given up hope of seeing Ryan brought to justice.

But then, everything changed—inexplicably fast.

Even with Tristan’s help, things shouldn’t have gone so smoothly. It was as if the Lane family had decided, all of a sudden, to abandon Ryan Cox.

Emily’s eyes darkened.

Andrew’s assistant hovered just behind him. Emily had noticed that ever since she’d started talking, the assistant had been watching her, looking like he wanted to say something but kept holding back.

She frowned at him. “Do you have something to say?”

Apparently, he hadn’t expected her to address him; he froze for a second.

Only when Andrew turned and gave him a look did he quickly shake his head. “No, nothing. I have nothing to say.”

“Emily, how long are you going to keep talking to him?”

Tristan’s voice came through the phone again, frustrated and a little hurt.

It hit Emily then—she hadn’t hung up on Tristan. Stifling a sigh, she said, “Yeah, I know. I’m leaving now.”

She turned to Andrew, giving a brief nod. “Nothing else, so I’ll be going.”

“Emily.”

She was about to leave when Isabella Austin appeared, holding Dennis Lane by the hand.

Emily’s expression cooled. “Mrs. Lane.”

Isabella stepped to Andrew’s side, offering Emily a polite smile. “Emily, I was just looking for Andrew and didn’t expect to run into you here.”

Emily’s response was flat. “Small world, I guess.”
