Rose Ward would only be afraid and run straight to Isabella Austin to report her, and then it would all be over.
Emily Blair lowered her gaze.
Rose’s soft spot had always been her grandmother.
Suddenly, there was a sound behind her—Rose was getting up to leave.
Emily kept her head down, only lifting her eyes once Rose had walked past, catching a glimpse of her retreating figure.
She didn’t say another word to Rose. Instead, Emily bought a cup of house coffee at the counter and left the shop.
Just as she stepped outside, her phone rang.
It was Tristan Davis.
Emily raised her brows in mild surprise, answering, “Look who finally found time to call me. The busy man himself.”
Tristan chuckled on the other end. “You called me a few days ago, right? I missed it and honestly, I was scared you’d be mad. The second I got my phone back I called you.”
Emily walked beneath the awning, coffee in hand. “Why would I be mad? Did you even see the message I sent you?”
He gave a low, sheepish laugh. “Yeah, I saw it. I just didn’t expect you to figure out it was me so fast—and then thank me on top of it.”
“I’m clever, what can I say? Though I’m not sure why you’re surprised. Haven’t I ever thanked you before?”
“No, that’s not it,” Tristan said quickly. “This time I volunteered to help you. You don’t owe me anything.”
Emily found a bench at the street corner and sat down. “Still, I ought to thank you. Mr. Davis’s calls don’t come cheap, and you even went out of your way to pull some strings for me. That must’ve been exhausting.”
Tristan’s laugh was soft, almost conspiratorial. “You make it sound like you’re being sarcastic.”
“Me? Never,” Emily replied, feigning innocence.
Tristan fell silent for a moment.
“Emily,” he finally said, “How many days have I been gone?”
Emily answered without thinking, “Didn’t count. Just a few days, right?”
He let out a sigh. “Emily, you’re heartless. I’ve been counting every single day over here, and all you can say is you didn’t keep track? You’re going to be the death of me.”
