Rose Ward’s eyes were red and brimming with tears. “Am I just supposed to stand by and watch her win the award?”
“Grandma was already old and frail. After everything Isabella Austin put her through, her health got even worse. Even if she wasn’t in the final stages of bone cancer, the doctors still recommended she stay in the hospital for long-term care.”
Tears welled up in Rose’s eyes. “I worked with Isabella. She paid me, she found doctors for Grandma, and all I had to do was give her my piano pieces. It was a fair trade. I could even accept having all those compositions under Isabella’s name for the rest of my life. I could do that. I could write music for her forever.”
“But I can’t stand by and watch her torment Grandma like this. I won’t!”
She wiped her tears away, her eyes blazing, voice trembling. “I can’t let this go. Even if it doesn’t make sense, I have to speak up.”
Emily Blair reached out and grabbed her wrist. “Don’t rush.”
“How am I supposed not to?” Rose cried desperately.
Emily lowered her voice. “Then start with Grandma.”
Rose sniffled. “What do you mean?”
Emily explained, “If Isabella tampered with Grandma’s medical records and gave her unnecessary treatments, she should be held legally responsible. There’s no way she’s walking away from this.”
Rose bit her lip. “So what do we do?”
Before Emily could answer, Mr. Parker’s voice sounded from beside them.
“Ms. Blair.”
Rose immediately turned away, wiping her tears with her back to him.
Emily stepped in, blocking Rose from view. “Mr. Parker, you’re still here?”
Mr. Parker came over, holding Linda’s hand, his expression apologetic. “I’m so sorry. I went to speak to the committee, but it turns out they never even looked at the evidence I submitted. They just came out and announced the final decision. I tried to argue, but they wouldn’t listen. There’s nothing more I can do…”
Emily lowered her gaze, her voice calm. “It’s all right. I know it’s not your fault.”
Regret clouded Mr. Parker’s eyes. “I misjudged you before. I promise, I’ll keep my word. Your company can pick a time to come by and finalize the rights for the arcade.”
Emily finally allowed herself a small, satisfied smile. “Thank you. I will.”
Mr. Parker’s tone grew firmer. “Don’t worry. I won’t stand by and do nothing. I’ll keep helping you as much as I can.”
