Emily Blair’s brows knitted together.
Benjamin Gomez’s gaze flickered over her for a second—cool and dismissive—before he strode straight into the ballroom without so much as a nod, as if they were complete strangers.
So she’d guessed right. Benjamin was here.
Rose Ward leaned in, concerned. “What’s wrong?”
Emily shook her head and forced a smile. “Nothing. Let’s go.”
Outside the hotel, a black car was idling at the curb, the driver waiting. As Emily reached for the door, Rose announced she’d take the subway home instead. Emily didn’t insist, letting her friend disappear into the bustle of the city.
Sliding into the backseat, Emily heard the driver ask, “Back to The Serenity, Ms. Blair?”
The Serenity was the upscale complex where Emily and Tristan Davis currently lived.
She opened her mouth to answer automatically, but then paused, glancing back at the glowing doors of the ballroom.
Warm yellow light spilled out, illuminating shifting silhouettes and sending fragments of laughter and conversation drifting into the night.
Emily sat in silence for a moment, then shook her head. “No, that’s alright. I’ll find my own way home.”
The driver looked puzzled but nodded. “Of course, Ms. Blair.”
She stepped out and scanned the street until she spotted an empty cab.
The cabbie, a middle-aged man with a friendly face, leaned out the window. “Evening, miss. Where to?”
Emily pulled a wad of bills from her purse—ten crisp twenties—and handed it to him. “In a minute, I’ll need you to tail another car. If you’re okay with that, the money’s yours. If not, I’ll get out.”
His eyes widened, first in delight, then in wary disbelief. He lowered his voice. “Miss, are you filming a spy movie or something? Sounds thrilling.”
Emily’s tone was cool. “Are you in or not?”
The cabbie hesitated, then blurted out, “This isn’t illegal, is it?”
She shook her head. “Nothing like that. You can relax.”
He gave her a quick once-over, then pocketed the cash. “You don’t look like trouble. Alright, I’m in. Just tell me which car—we’ll keep up, no problem.”
