Once she got in the car, Emily Blair dialed Xavier Gonzalez.

Emily had always been generous with him. She’d made sure he was well compensated with both shares and bonuses, and their friendship had grown strong through the years.

Xavier kept a healthy routine. It wasn’t even ten yet, but when he answered, his voice was already thick with sleep.

“Heading to bed?” Emily asked.

“Not yet. What’s up?”

“Is your laptop nearby?”

“Yeah, right next to me.”

Emily lowered her head, tapping out a message on her phone.

“I just sent you an address—The Pennington. I need you to wipe the footage of me getting into the cab. Just make sure no one can tell it was me.”

She heard some shuffling and the faint clatter of keys on his end—he was pulling his laptop over. “Alright, but I’ll need a bit of time. The Pennington has pretty tight security. It’s complicated.”

The middle-aged man sitting beside Emily in the cab was all ears, his expression a mix of nervous excitement. He looked like he could barely contain himself.

By the time she hung up, the cab had already pulled up to the man’s house.

Emily turned to him and said quietly, “Remember, keep this to yourself.”

He looked at her, both thrilled and confused. “Are you sure you’re not filming a movie or something? Catching a cheating lover—this is wild...”

He craned his neck, glancing around as if searching for hidden cameras.

“Alright, time to get out,” Emily said, her tone final.

He sat up straight, pantomimed zipping his lips, and saluted. “Don’t worry, I won’t breathe a word.”

When Emily arrived at the front entrance of The Serenity, her phone buzzed with a message from Xavier.
