Emily Blair’s voice was calm. “There’s always a way.”
Rose Ward gave a halfhearted smile. “When Isabella Austin found me a few years ago, I never imagined things would turn out like this. I certainly never thought she’d turn out to be so... shameless.”
Emily stayed quiet, her expression unreadable. Rose’s smile grew bleak. “You always seem so composed.”
Emily idly turned her coffee mug between her hands. “The sky won’t come crashing down. Try to relax.”
Rose lowered her head. “Yeah, you’re right.”
Emily stood, slipping her hands into her pockets. “Just focus on your work for the next while. If I need something, I’ll let you know. Don’t go overthinking things.”
Suddenly, Rose stood up as well. “I don’t get it. Why do you do so much for me?”
Emily gave her a sudden, almost amused smile. “You really think I’m helping you?”
Rose froze, caught off guard. “Aren’t you?”
Emily shook her head. “Not really. At most, we just have a common enemy.”
Elizabeth Wilson was still out of town on a business trip. When she heard last night that her grandmother had collapsed and been hospitalized, she couldn’t get back in time, so Emily had stepped in to look after the elderly woman.
After leaving the café, Emily headed straight to the hospital.
As she reached the door to the hospital room, she could already hear faint voices from inside.
Alex White had arrived with a team of doctors and nurses. Emily’s heart skipped a beat as she hurried in. “What’s going on?”
Surrounded by interns, Alex was leaning over the bed, checking on her grandmother. At the sound of Emily’s voice, he turned, his usually gentle eyes turning cold, his tone clipped. “Nothing’s wrong. Just doing routine rounds with the interns.”
Alex straightened up and continued speaking to the group, his tone measured and logical—clearly in teaching mode, all professionalism.
