My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 658

“Don’t you think that’s a little far-fetched?”

Hands in his pocket, Alex White strode over to Emily Blair, stopping just in front of her. He looked down, eyes laced with scorn.

“Emily, you and I are nothing more than a doctor and a patient’s family member. That’s it. If you’re trying to get me to see someone else, you seriously overestimate your own influence. Don’t flatter yourself.”

There was little expression on Emily’s face, yet Alex somehow managed to read humiliation and defiance into her impassive features—and the thought only amused him more.

Straightening up, Alex towered over her by several inches, gazing down from his comfortable height advantage.

“You haven’t changed a bit since a few years ago. Still as insufferable as ever.”

Unruffled, Emily met his eyes, her calm gaze unwavering. Her voice was steady. “Are you finished?”

Alex’s lips curled into a mocking smile. “Planning to argue with me now?”

She asked, “Did you really get your PhD from Vantage Point University’s School of Medicine?”

Alex let out a cold laugh. “What, not content with doubting my skills, now you’re questioning my credentials?”

He looked at her with open derision. “Should I go fetch my diploma and show it off to you?”

Ignoring his sarcasm, Emily continued, “What’s your relationship to Matthew Ross?”

Annoyance flickered in Alex’s eyes, but he paused, thinking back for a moment.

“He’s an old classmate of mine. Why are you asking?”

Impatience edged into his tone.

He clicked his tongue inwardly in frustration. Thanks to Isabella Austin, the last person he wanted to see right now was Emily Blair.

Emily pressed on, “So it seems the students coming out of your program aren’t exactly impressive, are they?”

He strode off a few paces.

Emily called after him, a little louder, “Do you remember the question I asked you this morning?”

Alex didn’t slow down.

Emily continued, “A doctor misdiagnosed a patient, told her she had late-stage bone cancer when it was just something minor. Because of that, she went through several rounds of chemotherapy, her body’s been wrecked, and she’s still in the hospital.”

“Don’t you want to know who made that mistake?”

Alex stopped, the question catching him off guard. He turned to look at her. “Matthew Ross?”

Emily nodded. “Yes. He was your classmate in med school, same year, same program.”

Alex scoffed. “No way. Matthew would never make a mistake like that.”
