Emily Blair spoke in a calm, even voice. “Actually, it was a misdiagnosis. The police have already taken him in for questioning, and the investigation into the medical incident is underway.”

Alex White’s expression darkened, a flicker of tension crossing his face.

She met his eyes. “The patient is my friend’s grandmother. She’s at a county hospital less than thirty minutes from here. If you don’t believe me, you can come with me and see for yourself.”

Alex stared at her for several seconds, his tone low and heavy. “You’d better not be lying to me.”

Emily tipped up her chin. “Of course not.”

“Lead the way,” Alex said curtly.

Emily had just started forward when a small, familiar voice caught her ear.

“Dad, where’s Mom? Why hasn’t she come to see me yet?”

Emily turned and saw Ashley Gomez and Benjamin Gomez. Ashley sat on a bench in the hospital corridor, head down, idly twisting the little plush charm attached to her sweater, her mood clearly downcast. Benjamin was beside her, murmuring soft reassurances.

After a full day and night, Ashley was still here at the hospital.

Was her fever still not better?

Emily’s concern made her linger, watching the pair for a few seconds longer. Alex followed her gaze, turning to look.

When he spotted the man, Alex’s eyes narrowed coldly. “Benjamin Gomez?”

Before Emily could react, Alex was striding across the hall, his posture tense and imposing. In a flash he was looming over Benjamin.

A shadow fell over Benjamin and Ashley. Instinctively, Benjamin pulled Ashley close, his brow furrowing as he looked up.

Ashley startled at the sudden presence, but managed to call out bravely, “Who are you?”

Alex shot Ashley a glowering look, then fixed his attention on Benjamin, a mocking laugh escaping his lips. “Well, well, Benjamin Gomez. You’ve got some nerve showing up here again.”
