The conference dragged on much longer than expected, and by the time it finally wrapped up, the hour was ridiculously late. Emily Blair had to sprint through the airport, suitcase in tow, barely making it onto her flight.
By the next morning, Emily landed in Astoria.
The moment she stepped off the plane, she popped open her suitcase and pulled on the thick down coat she’d packed ahead of time. Astoria was still in the grip of a heavy snowstorm; piles of snow lined the roads, and city workers, bundled up and wielding shovels, were struggling to clear the sidewalks.
Beside her, Donna Thomas asked, “Ms. Blair, are we heading to the hotel first?”
Emily handed her suitcase to the driver. “No, let’s go straight to the venue.”
“Of course.”
Donna quickly opened the car door for her.
This trip to Astoria was for an international tech symposium. Emily had been invited, but truthfully, she was only here to get a sense of the conference proceedings. Her real focus was on Matthew Ross’s younger siblings.
Sitting in the back of the car, Emily checked the time on her phone—9 a.m. back home. She mentally noted how little time she had left to give Matthew Ross—only five hours.
So far, there hadn’t been any updates from Rose Ward or anyone else.
But Emily wasn’t worried.
Whether Matthew Ross confessed or not, the truth would come out all the same.
By the time the symposium ended, Matthew Ross had less than half an hour left.
Leaving the venue, Emily headed straight for the school where Brandon and Helen Ross attended, armed with a folder of documentation for the authorities.
On the way, her phone buzzed with a new message from Rose Ward:
[I'm at the police station right now. Still haven't heard anything.]
Emily replied:
[Okay—half an hour left.]
Rose responded, anxiety clear in her words:
[Do you really think Matthew Ross will admit it? Why hasn’t he told the police anything yet?]
Before Emily could respond, another message popped up:
[He still refuses to admit it. What’s our next move?]
At the same time, Tristan Davis texted:
[From the look on Isabella’s face, she’s figured out you’re behind this. She seemed really agitated—didn’t even acknowledge Rose, just jumped in a cab and left.]
Emily replied to Tristan:
[Don’t worry about her.]
Then she messaged Rose:
[Got it. Don’t worry, just try to stay calm.]
In the last half hour, Emily met with school officials and personally handed over some of the real documents and evidence of the forgeries regarding Brandon and Helen Ross.
Because of Matthew Ross’s sudden change of heart, Emily ended up staying in Astoria for two extra days to cooperate with the school’s investigation.
During that time, Isabella Austin tried calling her several times, but Emily never picked up.
