My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 749

The moment Andrew Lane heard the word “close friend,” his eyes darkened.

Tristan Davis was playing the gracious host, but Andrew knew better than to think Tristan would be so thoughtful as to bring him a thank-you gift on Emily’s behalf. He cut straight to the point. “That won’t be necessary. If there’s a gift, I’d prefer it come directly from Emily herself. Since you’re just her friend, maybe you shouldn’t get too involved in her personal matters.”

Tristan didn’t look the least bit offended. In fact, his smile grew even brighter.

“You might not know, Mr. Lane, but this was Emily’s idea. Come on, let me show you.”

With that, Tristan made a sweeping gesture, inviting Andrew to follow.

Andrew shot him a cool glance, then strode forward, deliberately brushing past Tristan’s shoulder. He lifted his chin, arrogantly thinking to himself that he’d been here often enough to know exactly which room was Emily’s—he certainly didn’t need Tristan leading the way.

Tristan kept pace with him, almost as if he were trying to get ahead.

When they reached the door to the hospital room, Tristan stepped in front of Andrew, blocking his way. Then, in a tone that sounded all too familiar, he ducked inside and called out, “Emily, Mr. Lane’s here. Do you want him to come in and visit?”

Emily glanced over from her bed, surprised by Tristan’s odd behavior. She looked toward the door and, sure enough, saw Andrew standing there.

She stared at Tristan, baffled. Usually, Tristan’s face would sour at the mere mention of Andrew’s name—but today, he was all smiles, practically rolling out the red carpet for Andrew. What on earth was he up to?

Tristan’s whole demeanor felt off, and Emily honestly didn’t know how to respond.

Tristan pressed her, “Emily, don’t leave your guest waiting.”

Emily’s sense of unease grew. “...Then let him in, I suppose.”

Andrew stepped inside, and Tristan’s behavior only got weirder.

Right in front of Emily, Tristan became the picture of hospitality—ushering Andrew to the sofa, pouring him a glass of water, acting as if they were old friends.

Emily stared, utterly perplexed. Had Tristan lost his mind?

She watched, wide-eyed, as Tristan bent down, grabbed one of the supplement boxes from under her nightstand, and casually handed it to Andrew. “Emily was planning to give these away anyway, so why don’t you take this? Be sure to bring it with you when you leave.”

Now Emily finally understood why Tristan had been acting so out of character.

Of course—it was all building up to this.

Andrew looked at the box in Tristan’s hand, his brow slowly furrowing. He glanced up at Emily, his voice calm but chilly. “She was planning to give these away?”

The awkwardness in the room was palpable.

Right in front of the person who’d brought the gift, they were now offering to give it away to someone else.

Emily pressed her lips together, uncertain whether she should lie and explain, or tell Tristan to stop his nonsense before it got any worse.
