All the color drained from Isabella Austin’s face in an instant.
It was as if an explosion had gone off in her head, leaving her frozen where she stood.
Suddenly, Isabella shot to her feet, glaring down at Benjamin Gomez, her features twisted with rage and disbelief. “Why are you telling me this now? Didn’t you say you’d take care of it? Didn’t you promise me?”
Benjamin’s brow furrowed as he reached for her hand, but she slapped him away.
Her mind spun out of control, her voice rising in panic. “What is this supposed to mean? What am I to you?”
“Isabella…” Benjamin began.
Tears welled up in her eyes as she practically spat the words at him. “I stayed here for you. I did everything you asked, so you should do what I ask in return. Why are you telling me all this? What am I to you?!”
Benjamin stood and, ignoring her struggles, pulled her into his arms. “Isabella, just calm down—”
She fought against him desperately. “They’re going to arrest me, how am I supposed to calm down?!”
Breaking free of his embrace, Isabella pounded her fists against his chest, her voice shrill and desperate, dignity forgotten. “Go! Go fix this! I don’t care who you have to call—just get out there and fix it! You have to make this go away!”
Benjamin stood silent, taking every accusation she hurled at him.
Her hair was a mess, tears streaming down her cheeks; she looked nothing like her usual composed self—she was completely undone.
“Benjamin, you can’t do this to me. You promised me,” her voice cracked, trembling and helpless. “You promised, didn’t you?”
He pressed his lips together, gaze lowered.
She grabbed his shoulders, forcing him to meet her eyes. He glanced at her for only a moment before dropping his gaze again.
Benjamin’s eyes flickered. He pulled Isabella into his arms again as the nanny hovered behind Ashley, trying to comfort her. His voice was cold: “Take Miss Ashley back to her room. Don’t let her come out again.”
The nanny, clearly rattled, nodded quickly and scooped Ashley up off the floor.
Ashley’s cries faded as the bedroom door closed behind them.
Isabella twisted out of Benjamin’s embrace and slapped him hard across the face.
He let his head hang, his hair falling over his downcast eyes, jaw clenched.
She brushed past him, but he grabbed her hand. “Where are you going?”
She jerked free, her voice bitter and venomous. “If you can’t help me, then I’ll find someone who can. Someone has to be able to help me.”
