Benjamin lowered his voice. “Who can you count on to help you?”
Isabella stepped over to the foyer, bending down to swap her heels for a pair of flats. “Alex, maybe. Or someone else. There’s always someone willing to help if I ask.”
He let out a sudden, quiet chuckle. “You mean Alex White?”
She didn’t answer, focusing on slipping on her other shoe.
Benjamin walked over, looming above her as she straightened up. “Going to him won’t do any good.”
She froze, looking up at him. “How do you know that?”
A faint, mocking smile tugged at his lips. “Why do you think Matthew Ross suddenly turned on you? It was Alex. He went to see Matthew at the precinct, had a little chat, and not long after, Matthew handed you over to the police.”
Isabella’s eyes widened in disbelief. “No. No way. Alex would never do that to me.”
He pressed back, voice cool. “How can you be so sure? That’s what happened. Emily Blair’s been talking to him constantly these last few days. Who knows what they said? Why do you think the police dropped their investigation overseas and suddenly showed up at your door with evidence? It’s all because of Alex White.”
He stepped closer, looking down at her. “The night Emily Blair had her car accident, Alex was with her. They were both taken to the hospital.”
Isabella’s face drained of color.
She knew Alex and Matthew. If anyone could convince Matthew to turn, it was Alex.
Just yesterday, Matthew was still refusing to talk. Now he’d cracked? It could only be because of Alex.
Her legs seemed to give out all at once and she collapsed onto the bench by the door.
Benjamin reached out, gently brushing her cheek.
Her voice trembled with panic. “Why is this happening? Alex… why would he do this?”
“Benjamin,” she pleaded, “Please, I’m begging you. You have to help me.”
He stroked her hair and spoke softly. “Of course I’ll help you.”
She threw herself into his arms. He held her close.
“Now, you have to listen to me and do exactly as I say,” he murmured.
“Alright. I will. Just tell me what to do.”
After a brief pause, Isabella’s voice wavered. “Does Andrew know?”
A shadow flickered in Benjamin’s eyes. He answered in that same gentle tone, “I used to be able to keep things from him. But Isabella, you have to understand—at this point, there’s no way I can hide it anymore.”
Her face turned ashen.
