The call from the police came just as the meeting was wrapping up, but Emily Blair decided to finish before picking up.

She instructed her assistant to coordinate with the leads on the Travel Rabbit project and ordered PR to release a statement as soon as possible.

Once the meeting ended and everyone scattered to handle their tasks, Emily dialed the police back.

The officer answered almost immediately. “Ms. Blair.”

“Sorry, I was in a meeting when you called,” Emily said, her tone polite but brisk. “Is there something I can help you with?”

The officer’s voice was grave. “Ms. Blair, regarding the incidents involving you and Alex White—someone’s turned themselves in.”

Emily froze. “Who?”

“Jeremy Cox. Ryan Cox’s son. You know Ryan, of course. Jeremy confessed—he claims he arranged everything.”

A flicker of shock crossed Emily’s face, her brow knitting in confusion.

She searched her memory for the name. Jeremy Cox—right, Ryan Cox’s favorite son. If nothing unexpected happened, Jeremy would inherit most of Ryan’s estate.

Why Jeremy?

The officer continued, “We’d like you to come down to the station. We’ll explain everything.”

“All right.”

She was about to hang up when she blurted, “Wait.”

“Yes?”

She hesitated. “Have you contacted Alex White?”

“My colleague already did. He’ll be joining us shortly.”

Emily had heard he’d been on leave these past days—he hadn’t been to the hospital, and he hadn’t answered any of her messages.

She lowered her eyes and stepped inside.

The same female detective she knew from before greeted her and Alex. “Ms. Blair, Mr. White—let’s talk in my office.”

Alex seemed to only just realize Emily was behind him, replying a beat too late. “Sure.”

Watching him, Emily’s frown deepened.

The officer set her mug on the table and gestured for them to sit.

She sat across from them, hands folded, first explaining Jeremy and Ryan Cox’s relationship, then filling Alex in on Emily’s complicated history with Ryan Cox.

Out of the corner of her eye, Emily saw Alex lift his head slightly, pausing before he nodded for the officer to continue.
