“Jeremy Cox turned himself in. He admitted to orchestrating both car accidents and Ms. Blair’s kidnapping. He withdrew a large sum of cash from the bank, then paid the two drivers and the kidnappers directly—everything was handled in person, off the record. They were careful, too. After getting the money, none of them deposited it right away, which is why we found no traces in their bank accounts.”
“He’s also provided evidence. Following his statements, we searched the homes of the two drivers and found large amounts of cash. As for the kidnappers, they stashed their share out of state—it’ll take us a little longer to recover it.”
“We checked Jeremy Cox’s bank records as well. Sure enough, there’s a record of a sizeable withdrawal just days before the first accident. He even told us where these exchanges took place. The police reviewed the security footage and confirmed his story. The digital conversations between Jeremy Cox and the others also prove he hired them.”
“Because Jeremy Cox confessed, the drivers and kidnappers all came forward, too. Everyone’s story matches up. The evidence is solid.”
Emily Blair felt a heaviness settle in her chest. “So, he did all this because of Ryan Cox?”
The detective nodded. “According to Jeremy Cox, before Ryan Cox’s arrest, he was confident he’d inherit the family business. But after Ryan went to prison, his brothers forced him out of the company. He lost his claim to the inheritance, and most of his bank accounts were frozen. He felt his life was ruined, and he’s resented you ever since. It took him years to scrape together enough money to pay for a hit.”
Emily understood.
After Ryan Cox’s imprisonment, the Cox family fell into chaos. The company’s stock plummeted, and Lucas Cox seized the opportunity to take control, pushing out his siblings and relatives and securing his grip on power.
In a family war like this, making enemies was inevitable. Still, Emily barely remembered ever interacting with Jeremy Cox.
But now, the motive was clear—and so was the evidence of the murder-for-hire scheme.
She asked, “And the money Jeremy Cox used—was there anything suspicious about the source?”
The detective shook his head. “No. We checked all his accounts. Most were frozen, but one personal account remained active. Over the years, he’d slowly put money into it. Most of the funds for the hit came from there, with a small portion borrowed from friends. We’ve verified all of it.”
Alex White said nothing.
Tristan Davis’s expression darkened instantly.
Emily shook her head, incredulous. “That’s absurd.”
If that were true, Tristan—who’d been by her side constantly—would have been the more obvious target.
The detective thought back. “Jeremy said he watched you both for days and saw that you met frequently—especially at Mr. White’s hospital. The security footage clearly shows Jeremy paying off the driver who hit Mr. White.”
