My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 816

He was sitting far enough away that he could only make out the small ID photo in the upper right corner.

Tristan Davis, assuming it was a job application, reached out for the stack of papers and said, “So the company’s hiring?”

At his words, both Emily Blair and Elizabeth Wilson’s eyes darted to the documents.

Emily’s lips parted, her expression blank with surprise.

Elizabeth’s eyes went wide; she sprang up from the couch.

Monkey snatching the moon!

Before Tristan could grab the papers, Elizabeth swooped in, bent over, and snatched them up just in time. Hugging the documents to her chest, she shot Tristan a nervous smile, though her scalp tingled with nerves. “Company secrets, you know. You can’t look.”

Tristan shot her a puzzled look, then glanced at Emily. “Since when are there company secrets I’m not allowed to see?”

Both women looked just as stunned as he felt.

With impressive composure, Elizabeth rolled the papers into a tube and grinned. “Take a guess. I’m not telling.”

Tristan chuckled, folding his arms as he leaned back on the couch next to Emily. “Alright, have it your way.”

Elizabeth quickly tucked the papers behind her, sitting down and pretending to focus on the TV.

Tristan turned to Emily. “Any plans for today?”

Elizabeth immediately perked up, eavesdropping with undisguised interest.

Emily hesitated for a moment. “Yeah. I have plans tonight.”

Tristan, assuming she had a business meeting, said, “Work stuff? I checked the calendar from your assistant, and your weekend looks completely free.”

Emily pressed her lips together.

Not wanting to invade anyone’s privacy, Emily did her best to focus on the TV instead.

But Tristan’s voice, resigned and gentle, still reached her ears: “Stop crying. Just tell me what’s wrong.”

The sobs abruptly ceased. Cynthia’s voice, trembling with disbelief and relief, broke through: “Tristan, you finally answered my call.”

Tristan glanced at Emily again.

Cynthia’s voice was loud enough that, sitting so close, Emily couldn’t help but hear every word.

Seeing Emily pointedly pretending not to care, Tristan felt a headache coming on. He rubbed at his temple. “Yeah. Just tell me what you need.”

Cynthia sniffled, her voice plaintive and wounded.

“Tristan, this is the first time you’ve ever blocked me—and for so long, too. If I hadn’t gone to your grandfather, would you have ever taken me off your blocked list? I’m so upset. Can’t you just comfort me, please?”
