My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 838

He was way too close. Tristan Davis was sitting far too close for comfort.

Emily Blair shifted uneasily, pressing her lips together.

Suddenly, she felt something brush against her mouth—a fleeting touch that left her frozen. At that exact moment, she realized Tristan’s hand, which had been holding hers, had gone stiff, too.

She lifted her gaze to find Tristan staring intently into her eyes. He looked as if he wanted to say something, but the words caught in his throat; his expression was a tangled mess of longing and restraint.

A heavy silence fell over the car. Emily watched as Tristan’s gaze flickered downward, lingering unmistakably on her lips.

She saw his Adam’s apple move as he swallowed.

Her heart skipped a beat, warmth flooding her cheeks.

The intensity was too much. She leaned back, trying to put some distance between them, and with one hand, she pushed his away.

Her mind spun wildly as she blurted out the first thing that came to her. “Are you trying to suffocate me?”

The words were out before she could stop herself, and instantly, she regretted them.

Even a child could tell she was desperately trying to change the subject.

Embarrassed, she chanced a glance at Tristan’s face.

He was still staring at her—at her face, and, unmistakably, her lips—his gaze burning with heat.

Feeling her cheeks flush even more, Emily turned her head away.

A few minutes passed in awkward silence. Gradually, the flush faded from her face, and the tension in the air eased.

Just as she thought things were settling, Tristan edged closer again. “Emily…”

His voice was soft, but it sent a jolt through her. “What is it?”

He didn’t answer, just kept looking at her without blinking, close enough that she could feel his breath.

That insufferable warmth crept up again. Emily’s breath caught; she pressed her lips together and shrank back into her seat.

His gaze was too intense. Uncomfortable, she shifted away and snapped, “Tristan, what are you doing?”

Emily, still breathing hard, lowered the pillow, only to see that same infuriatingly smug expression on his face.

She narrowed her eyes. “Tristan Davis!”

He finally got the message, straightening up and putting on a more serious face. “Okay, okay, I’m done.”

Emily huffed, tossed the pillow aside, and settled back against her seat, willing her pulse to slow down.

The car grew quiet once more.

But before long, Tristan leaned toward her again.

She shot him a warning glare.

He tried to stifle his smile as he drew a bit closer. “Emily, I’m really happy today.”

She gave him a cool look. “You’re celebrating way too soon.”
