As soon as the words left her lips, she grabbed the nearest throw pillow and hurled it straight at Tristan Davis’s face.
He caught it easily—despite being struck, a satisfied, delighted grin spread across his face, as if he’d just received a wonderful present.
Emily Blair couldn’t even look at him; she squeezed her eyes shut instead.
But the moment her eyelids closed, Tristan’s unrestrained laughter echoed through the car.
Emily had no plans for the weekend, so she told the driver to take her straight home.
As they neared her building, Tristan’s phone rang.
She glanced over and saw him smirk at the name flashing on the screen.
Tristan answered, “Back in town?”
Emily turned away, listening to Tristan banter with the caller in a familiar, easy tone.
Her gaze dropped, lips pressed into a tense line.
Tristan sounded relaxed. “Alright, I’ll head over now. Wait for me.”
He hung up just as the car pulled up to the entrance of her block.
Emily told the driver to stop at the curb, then turned to Tristan. “You heading there on your own, or do you want the driver to drop you off?”
He slipped his phone into his pocket. “I’ll go myself—see you later.”
She nodded. “Alright, goodbye.”
Tristan shut the door behind him. Emily watched as he flagged down a passing cab at the corner.
Tristan caught the bartender’s attention with a snap of his fingers, ordering himself something light.
The man arched an eyebrow. “That’s not like you. You used to go for the hard stuff.”
Tristan just smiled and took a sip, giving his friend a look loaded with meaning.
This was Tanner Miller, a friend Tristan had met overseas years ago. They’d hit it off instantly and quickly become as close as brothers.
Tanner leaned in, his eyes twinkling. “No way—you’re not… married, are you? Got a wife keeping you on a leash now?”
Tristan laughed, set his glass down, and shoved Tanner’s shoulder. “Quit guessing. I’m not married.”
Tanner stroked his chin thoughtfully. “Well, you’ve got that look—must be seeing someone, right? Is it that girl you told me about before? What was her name…?”
Tristan clicked his tongue. “Emily Blair.”
