Emily Blair had just taken the eggs out of the fridge when her phone lit up with a call from Albert Rivera.
Seeing his name flash on the screen, she couldn’t help but think of his recent attempts to court her. Still, since their companies were working together on a project, it wasn’t as if she could simply ignore him.
Albert’s voice was brisk but polite. There was a minor issue with their joint project, he explained, and he needed her help to sort it out.
Emily sighed as she glanced at the eggs still sitting on the counter.
Albert must have heard her, because his tone softened. “Rough start to your weekend? Not thrilled about working overtime?”
She let out a short laugh. “I’m just hungry. Haven’t eaten yet.”
There was a pause. “Tell you what—I’m still at the café. Head over to the office first, and I’ll bring you something to eat. By the time you get there, I should be just arriving.”
Relief flickered across her face. “Sounds good to me.”
When Emily arrived at the office, Albert showed up five minutes later, arms full of steaming hot breakfast—a generous spread of savory pastries and warm bread rolls.
He set the containers down in front of her, carefully peeling back each lid. “Eat first. We can talk work after.”
With only the two of them in the office, Emily kept her focus on the project proposal, scanning for problem areas. She flagged a few issues and went to check with the team member responsible for that section.
The crux of the matter, really, was that the two companies’ expectations weren’t quite aligned. Albert had spotted the discrepancy during his review and called Emily in to get everyone on the same page before the next phase of the project.
Emily didn’t think it was a big deal, so she set her laptop aside.
She eyed the breakfast spread, a little surprised. “You bought so much—I can’t eat all of this.”
Albert just smiled. “Don’t worry. If you can’t finish, I’ll help.”
She hesitated, picking up a flaky pastry with her fork. “You really didn’t have to. How much was all this? Let me pay you back.”
Tristan Davis: Where are you?
She’d been so absorbed in work that she hadn’t even heard her phone buzz.
Realizing how long it had been, she replied, letting him know she was at the office.
Tristan responded almost immediately: I saw you. Who are you with?
Saw her? Emily frowned, puzzled.
What did you see? she typed back, then added, Albert Rivera’s here too.
Tristan replied: Got it. I’ll be right up.
Suddenly, it all made sense. Her office had floor-to-ceiling windows that faced the main entrance. Tristan must have seen her light on from outside.
