“I remember thinking back then, I never wanted you to work so hard for me, or anyone else, ever again.”
As he spoke, Tristan Davis pulled her even closer, holding her tight.
“All I could think was, you’re the most beautiful woman in the world—and I want to see you smile, always. That’s when I realized I liked you…” Tristan’s voice was soft but earnest.
Emily Blair’s heart skipped a beat. Her pulse thundered in her ears.
“I wanted things to happen naturally between us, to take it slow, to let you warm up to me in your own time. Everything was going so well—until Andrew Lane showed up. That was the first time I ever felt threatened. I’ve been jealous so many times because of him,” Tristan admitted, sounding a little hurt. “You even told me yourself you used to like him. How could you like someone like that? I know it’s normal, you had your life before I came along, and it’s only natural you liked other guys. Still, I have to say—your taste back then was terrible.”
Emily couldn’t help but laugh.
Tristan continued, “Because of Andrew Lane, I realized I couldn’t take it slow anymore. If I waited any longer, he’d steal everything from me. That’s why I asked you to pretend to be my girlfriend in front of my grandfather—yeah, I had my own selfish reasons. I hoped maybe... fake would turn into real. But we got found out.”
“And then, you started spending time with Albert Rivera—you two went on that blind date, you work together. He’s a great guy, sure, but I always believed you’d never fall for him. Elizabeth Wilson told me all about you two but I never paid it any mind. I trust you. I know you set your standards high; Albert was never going to make the cut.”
“But then today, Elizabeth told me you accepted flowers from Albert. I was sure of you, but when she said that, I couldn’t sit still. The minute my meeting ended, I came straight to find you. Luckily, things weren’t the way she made them sound.”
“I was impulsive today, but I don’t regret it. Honestly, this was bound to happen sooner or later—Elizabeth just sped things up. I was always going to tell you how I feel. I needed an answer, your answer.”
“Emily Blair, you have a history with Andrew Lane, and I can accept that.” Tristan’s arms tightened around her, holding her close—almost as if he wanted to keep her safe from the world. “But what I really want is a future with you. Will you give me that?”
When he finished, a hush fell over the car.
Emily’s heart slowed, steadying at last. A peaceful kind of calm settled in her chest.
She couldn’t help but think, Tristan really does talk a lot—so much that her head was spinning from everything he’d said.
But he really, truly liked her.
