Emily Blair offered a sincere, “Thank you.”
Albert Rivera felt a pang of regret, but he was the kind of man who knew how to let go. They were all adults now; the age of reckless, all-consuming love was long behind them. With responsibilities on their shoulders, grown-ups had to approach things with clear heads.
“Don’t worry,” he reassured her, “whatever happened between us won’t affect the partnership between our companies. As your business partner, I truly admire your capabilities—and those of your company. I trust you.”
Emily smiled. “Then here’s to a smooth collaboration.”
“To a smooth collaboration.”
Albert turned and walked away.
Tristan Davis kept his head down, his free hand gripping Emily’s arm in silence.
She glanced at him, her voice playful. “What’s this? Are you jealous?”
Tristan looked up at her, his tone even. “Not quite.”
Emily let out a soft laugh. “Well, if you’re not jealous, I guess I don’t need to make it up to you.”
Immediately, Tristan’s expression turned serious. He tugged gently at her arm. “Even if I’m not, you still should.”
Emily couldn’t help but laugh, patting the back of his hand. “There’s nothing to be jealous about. I didn’t accept his offer, and I certainly didn’t take his flowers.”
Tristan’s gaze softened. Suddenly, he leaned in and pressed a quick kiss to her cheek before pulling away just as fast.
Emily blinked, then grinned. “Sneaky, aren’t you?”
Tristan arched an eyebrow, looking thoroughly pleased with himself.
Emily shook her head, laughing. “With all these people around, you’re not even a little embarrassed?”
Tristan only smiled at her, content.
But Emily’s attention shifted, drawn to the large window behind Tristan. Outside, a middle-aged woman in plain clothes stood with her back to them, peering around uncertainly.
Emily narrowed her eyes, studying the woman’s silhouette. She looked so familiar.
