My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 931

Tristan leaned in close, his voice low and intimate against her ear. “Go over and ask her.”

Emily nodded. “Alright.”

She walked over, calling out, “Mom, what are you looking at?”

As soon as Emma heard her daughter’s voice, she stiffened, turning around almost mechanically. The look on her face was odd—caught between embarrassment and nerves. She forced a smile. “What are you two doing here?”

“We came for dinner,” Emily replied, suspicion growing in her chest. “Mom, what were you just looking at?”

Emma waved a hand dismissively. “Nothing, really. I was just out window shopping, taking a look around. I’m not up to anything, and I’ll head home soon.”

Emily eyed her mother. “Is that so?”

Emma shot her a glare. “You brat, I’m your mother. Would I lie to you?”

Emily glanced in the direction where Isabella’s parents’ car had just driven away, and after a beat of silence, she asked, “Have you eaten yet?”

“Already did, I’m heading home right now. Don’t worry about me—go on, enjoy your dinner.” Emma turned away quickly, waving a hasty goodbye over her shoulder. “I’ll see you later. Don’t stay out too late.”

She couldn’t see her own expression, but Emily could: her mother’s face was written all over with panic, like a neon sign screaming she was hiding something.

Emily frowned, muttering under her breath, “What the heck is going on? How would my mom even know Isabella Austin’s parents?”

Tristan wrapped an arm over her shoulder. “If you can’t figure it out right now, let it go for a while. Besides, it’s almost time for our food to come out. Let’s get back and eat, okay?”

Emily looked up at him, some of the worry easing from her brow. “Okay.”

After dinner, the two of them went to see a movie.

The film had rave reviews online and was smashing box office records, but Emily found herself zoning out for most of it. She just couldn’t focus—her mind kept circling back to that strange encounter. She felt like she was missing something important.

To her, Emma and Isabella’s parents were from two completely different worlds. How could their paths have crossed all of a sudden?

Caught up in a jumble of thoughts, she sat there, distracted, staring at the screen but hardly seeing it.
