She pressed her lips together, her fingers curling slightly as she murmured, “No.”

Emily Blair gave a soft, amused snort, pulling her hand back and turning away.

But Tristan Davis reached out, slipping an arm around her waist and pulling her right back to him. “Don’t run off.”

His voice dropped, coaxing, teasing. “Come on, give me a kiss.”

Emily’s eyes sparkled with a proud, playful glint, but in the end, she didn’t turn him down.

Tristan’s face inched closer, and Emily slowly raised her arms, looping them around his neck.

Both of them closed their eyes.

“Ah!”

Just as their lips were about to meet—barely an inch apart—footsteps echoed down the hallway, followed by a startled little yelp.

Emily froze, eyes flying open as she looked toward the sound.

Emma George stood there, purse dangling from her hand, staring at them in utter shock.

“Mom!”

Emily’s cheeks flushed a deep red. She immediately pushed Tristan away, putting a good three feet of space between them as she looked down and fiddled with her clothes.

Tristan looked a bit sheepish too. “Mrs. George…”

The two of them stood there, awkward and guilty, like a pair of high school sweethearts caught by their teacher.

Emma glanced from Emily to Tristan, finally finding her voice. “You… you two are together?”

Tristan rubbed the back of his neck.

Sure, he wanted people to know about their relationship, but they’d just started dating, and he wasn’t sure if Emily wanted to go public—especially not to her family—so he kept quiet and glanced at her.

But Emily was perfectly straightforward. She had nothing to hide; there was nothing shameful about being with Tristan.

“That’s right. I’m dating Tristan now.”

Emma looked flustered. “So what you two were just—”
