My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 940

“I’m not sure where those three children are now. I might need to check with the headmistress—she might know.”

Clutching the information folder, Emily Blair nodded. “Thank you very much.”

Without delay, Ms. Morris pulled out her phone and dialed the headmistress’s number.

She tried three times in a row, but no one picked up.

Setting her phone down with a sigh, Ms. Morris explained, “The headmistress is getting on in years, and her hearing isn’t what it used to be. Sometimes she just doesn’t hear the phone ring. I have to go teach the children soon. Why don’t you leave me your number? I’ll let you know as soon as I manage to reach her.”

Emily considered this for a moment. “Perhaps you could give me her number instead? That way I can try contacting her myself—you won’t have to go out of your way.”

Ms. Morris hesitated. “She usually doesn’t answer calls from unfamiliar numbers.”

“Or maybe,” Emily suggested, “you know where she lives? I could visit her directly and ask in person.”

Ms. Morris thought it over for a few seconds and finally agreed. “That could work. She doesn’t live far from here, actually.”

She scribbled a phone number and an address on a sticky note and handed it to Emily. “Here you are. If you can’t reach her, just let me know.”

Emily took the note and offered a sincere thank you. “I appreciate it, Ms. Morris.”

The headmistress’s address was just as Ms. Morris had described—not far from Seedlings of Hope.

Emily drove for about half an hour before reaching her destination.

The headmistress lived in an old apartment building on the outskirts of the city. Ivy climbed the faded brick walls, and in some places, the tiles had fallen away, exposing the concrete beneath. Rust streaked the metal bars across the windows.

Beneath the building, a few elderly residents sat in the shade of a tree, grandkids playing nearby.

Emily approached a man who looked a bit younger than the rest. “Excuse me, sir, does Lauren Reid live here?”

He squinted at her for a moment, then pointed behind him. “Lauren Reid? She’s in that building, third floor. Go on up and have a look.”

“Thank you, sir,” Emily replied politely.
