My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 941

Emily Blair said, “I’m here to ask Ms. Reid a few questions. Years ago, there was a child at Sunshine House—that orphanage that closed down over a decade ago. Her birth father is looking for her now. I wanted to see if Ms. Reid might know where she is.”

The old man folded his hands behind his back. “Sunshine House?”

Emily repeated to him what she’d told Ms. Morris earlier.

He stepped aside from the doorway. “Come in, then. Let’s talk inside.”

“Thank you.”

Emily handed over her fruit basket. “Just a small token of appreciation—I hope you’ll accept it.”

The old man shut the door firmly, his tone brooking no argument. “No need for that. You can take it with you when you leave.”

Emily hesitated, surprised, then nodded. “Alright. I’ll bring it back with me later.”

She followed him into the living room.

“Have a seat, wherever you like. My wife’s in the bedroom—I’ll go call her.”

Emily sat down and listened as the old man called out to his wife, his voice raised louder each time. “Honey, someone’s here to ask about the old orphanage. Come out here.”

He repeated himself three times before another voice finally answered from the bedroom.

“Who is it?” The woman’s voice was faint.

“You’ll see when you come out,” he replied, repeating himself again.

By the time Lauren Reid finally emerged, nearly ten minutes had passed.

Though Ms. Reid was a bit hard of hearing, she was still in good health—and actually moved faster than her husband.

Emily stood up. “Ms. Reid, hello.”

Lauren’s voice boomed. “What was that?”

Emily faltered for a moment. “Uh—”
