My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 975

Just as Emily hooked another fish, Andrew Lane spoke again. “He’s just your boyfriend, not your husband. There’s no legal protection in that.”

As his words hung in the air, Emily was unhooking the fish. Her hand trembled, and the fish slipped from her grip, plopping back into the lake and vanishing beneath the ripples.

Emily said nothing.

Elizabeth Wilson leaned over so far she was practically in Emily’s lap, straining to eavesdrop. When she caught what Andrew had said, her mouth dropped open in shock.

Emily’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “Since when did you toss ethics out the window, Mr. Lane? You’d really say something like that?”

Andrew’s tone was breezy, as if it hardly mattered. “You’ve known me for years. Don’t you know what kind of man I am?”

Emily’s throat tightened. Of course she knew.

He presented himself as calm, polite, a master at navigating the rules. But underneath? He was a wild dog—doing whatever he wanted, whenever he pleased. Born into a world most people could only dream of, his family name and his own abilities had always been his shield.

She’d seen it all in her past life. Andrew Lane’s brand of madness let him trample morals at will. He’d do anything to her if he felt like it. Even after learning Daisy was his own daughter, he’d turned his back without a glance, never once stepping up as a father.

He was the very definition of a “dangerous dog that doesn’t bark.”

If Andrew wanted to play these twisted games with her, to get his kicks at her expense, then Emily had no intention of playing nice.

“Tell me, Mr. Lane, have you been following the gossip lately?”

Without waiting for his answer, Emily continued, “There’s this story online—some guy had an affair with a high school teacher. Her husband found out, pulled up all the cheating evidence, messages, photos, made a PowerPoint about it, and posted the whole thing online. It blew up. The guy’s social media got doxxed, he was hounded off the internet, can’t even leave his house now.”

She gave a pointed little laugh. “Planning to make your own internet debut, Mr. Lane?”

She hoped that would make him back down, but clearly, Andrew’s skin was thicker than she’d thought.
