She frowned, struggling to sit up in bed. Her throat was painfully dry, and she reached for the glass of water on her nightstand, gulping it down.
The cool water provided a moment of clarity to her foggy mind, but her body still felt leaden. She slowly swung her legs over the side of the bed, the world tilting dangerously. After sitting for a moment to steady herself, she used the nightstand for support and shuffled to the bathroom, where she numbly brushed her teeth and washed her face.
The simple tasks left her utterly drained, and she had to sit on the edge of the bed again to rest.
Emily touched her forehead. It was burning up. *I guess I really do have to go to the hospital,* she thought weakly.
Bracing herself on the nightstand, she stood and reached for her phone.
Just as her fingers touched it, the screen lit up with a call. Surprisingly, it was Tristan.
It felt like they hadn’t spoken in a while.
Emily felt a little dazed but answered immediately, pressing the phone to her ear.
“Emily,” Tristan’s voice came through, laced with its usual playful tone.
She smiled faintly and hummed in response.
Tristan chuckled, his voice turning warm and intimate. “It’s been a few days. Miss me?”
Emily opened her mouth, but for once, she was at a loss for words. This was the first real relationship she’d ever been in, spanning two lifetimes, and she was still too reserved to express her feelings openly.
But maybe it was the fever making her dizzy, because an uncharacteristic impulse took over.
Tristan, hearing nothing on the other end, felt his initial excitement at finally getting a chance to call her deflate a little. He knew they had just started dating, and her feelings for him might not be as deep as his were for her.
Though a little disappointed, he didn't want to make her uncomfortable. “Forget I asked…”
