My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 998

“I know,” Emily said softly.

She walked out of her room, phone in hand, and called for Emma. Hearing the sound of Emma frantically getting ready to take her to the hospital, Tristan felt a small measure of relief. “I’ll let you go,” he said. “I don’t want to keep you.”

Emily hummed in agreement.

“Listen to the doctor, get plenty of rest, and take your medicine,” he added. “Don’t rush back to work. Your health is the most important thing.”

Emma was pulling Emily along, throwing a coat over her shoulders. “Put this on before we go out,” she commanded.

“I will,” Emily said into the phone.

Perhaps because she was sick, Tristan’s voice sounded especially soft and gentle. “I’ll hang up now.”

With her muddled brain, Emily just nodded, forgetting for a moment that he couldn’t see her. When she realized the call hadn’t ended, she belatedly tapped the screen to hang up.

At the hospital, Emma told her to sit down and wait while she rushed off to handle the registration.

As Emily sat there, she got a call from Andrew. She hesitated for a moment before answering. “Mr. Lane.”

“Still have a fever?” Andrew’s deep voice came through the phone.

Emily glanced at Emma’s back in the queue. “I’m at the hospital.”

Andrew paused. “Which one?”

Even with her brain feeling like mush, Emily knew she needed to keep her distance from the man on the other end of the line. “My mom’s with me, Mr. Lane,” she said, her tone polite but distant. “You don’t need to worry.”
