We stopped by the store on the way home for groceries. Our pantry needed a refill, and we were running low on basically everything. We rarely grocery shopped together. Usually, it would just get delivered to the house.
“Why don’t we do this more often?” He asked.
“What get groceries?”. He frowned.
I nodded, picking up some apples. “I don’t mind that they get delivered, but at least this way we get to see what’s here.”
“You mean you get to buy random stuff that we don’t need”. He smirked.
“That too”. I grinned. “But I do love a sale. Buy one get one free”.
I dumped the bags of potatoes into the cart.
“Do we really need two bags?”.
We didn’t, we probably wouldn’t get through one before they turned bad, but I was making a point.
“I think we should start cooking more. All we do is eat takeout, and I’m getting kind of sick of it”.
“You want to cook?”
“I want to eat healthier foods and try for a more balanced diet. We can’t survive on takeout forever.”
“I mean we could but-…”. He scratched the back of his head. “You don’t cook, babe.”
“I can try”. I huffed.
“We can try”. He grinned grabbing a hold of my hand. “If you want to do a healthier lifestyle then that’s what we’ll do”. He brought my hand to his lips placing a kiss on my knuckles.
“Do you want to cuddle later?” I asked.
“Cuddle?”. He smirked.
“On the couch, snacks and a new episode of the rookie?” I smiled.
“Whatever makes you happy, princess.” He slipped his arm around my shoulders as we continued with the shopping.
I jerked awake wiping the side of my mouth. We were still driving home, it felt like I had been sleeping for hours and when I noticed the time I frowned. It was almost 4pm I had been sleeping for hours.
“Jake?”.
“I didn’t want to wake you, babe”.
“So, you’ve been driving around? What about the groceries?”. The frozen goods would be ruined and no good. A sigh fell from my lips at the money we had just wasted.
“No”. I rolled my eyes. “I just wanted to know if he said anything to you”. We hadn’t really spent any time together and I wasn’t sure we would get to before he went home.
“He hasn’t said anything to me babe but why not just ask him”. He nodded as we pulled into the driveway.
My dad was sitting on the front step, drinking what I presume to be coffee. He got to his feet as soon as he noticed us.
“I’m going to head over and see my dad. Will you be okay?”. Jake asked.
“Yeah”. I nodded.
I kissed him goodbye before getting out of the car.
“Coffee’ hot”. My dad smiled.
“Do you want to come in, and we can sit out back?”. It was way more comfortable than us trying to share a step.
“Sure”. He nodded. “I’d like that”.
“Okay”. I smiled.
Every weary thought I had about him not wanting to be here disappeared from my mind. I had to let it sink in that he was here, and he did, in fact, want to be in my life.
