In true Ellen fashion she huffed and puffed because I had come all the way down here.

She was my gran, and I wanted to make sure she was okay.

“George told you to stay home Leah”.

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. If she caught me, l’d get an earful. But I wasn’t going to stay home when she was lying in hospital.

“I wanted to make sure you were okay. I knew something was up when we came for dinner and the house was in darkness”.

“Oh, shoot”. She made a face. “I forgot to text you and

let you know. It all happened so fast George just wanted to get me here and get me checked out”.

“Gran it’s fine and we can have dinner anytime. Has the doctor been back?”.

“They don’t think anything is broken but I’m waiting to be taken for an x-ray just to be sure. You should go home; I could be here for hours before I’m seen to”.

“I don’t mind being here or waiting for hours”. I spoke.

“Well, I do. It’s late and I’m sure you have better things to do than sit here all night”.

“I called Aunt Claire; she should be here soon”.

“I called your Aunt Claire and told her to stay put. I want you to go home Leah and I’ll call you in the morning”.

“I think it’s best we let your gran rest”. George spoke.

“If anything changes, you’ll be the first one I call”.

Why did I get the feeling they didn’t want me here?

Brushing it off I agreed to go home and wait for her to call me. I clipped my seatbelt into place as Jake drove us home.

It’s not like we didn’t get along or she didn’t like me.

Our last engagement was fun and relaxed and yet I still couldn’t help the nerves.

“I thought you were her favourite?”. I asked.

“I am”. He winked. “And I’ll see her tomorrow night at dinner”

“So, we’re going to your parents for dinner?”.

He nodded. “My grans in town so of course my mom has to have a family dinner”.

In true Charlotte style. Can’t say I expected anything less.

“I always get nervous when you’re not there”. I pulled the covers back and got into bed. “I tell myself I’ve nothing to be nervous about but I still am. Even now my stomachs in knots”.
