I was in bed drinking my tea the TV on in the background, but I wasn’t paying attention. I couldn’t concentrate, I wanted to know what was going on. I wanted to get dressed and head out there:
But I knew it wouldn’t be the best idea. I didn’t need a fight on my hands and that’s exactly what would happen if I went.
Sighing I grabbed my phone and called Alanna.
Straight to voicemail.
Huffing I sent a message to Carter in the hopes that he would reply. He was out there, probably found whoever the wolf was. If it wasn’t one of ours then who was it? An outsider? A rogue? Were there more than one?
I couldn’t sit here and do nothing, but I also couldn’t leave the house when I was told to stay put. But it’s not like it stopped me before”.
“No”. I groaned.
I would stay here and wait until he was home.
I finished my tea, turned out the light and put friends on the tv. I would catch up on the rookie another time. Rolling onto my side a yawn fell from my lips as I rubbed at my eyes.
I scrolled through my phone one more time before placing it on the bedside table. I could wait until tomorrow I reminded myself.
…..
I felt the coolness of his body against mine as he slid into the bed. I felt his lips against my forehead but didn’t bother to open my eyes. I was comfortable and not in the mood for conversation.
“Are you awake?”. He whispered.
He knew I was awake.
“No”. I bit back my smile.
A light chuckle fell from his lips as he pulled me against him wrapping me up in his arms.
“Sorry I woke you babe”. He kissed the top of my head.
“Is everything okay?”. I muttered.
“How come I didn’t know about the traps”.
“They’re set up around the perimeter, on the outskirts. This wasn’t supposed to happen”. He sat up fast. “I need to go out there. I can’t stay in here until I know the kid’s going to be okay”.
I stayed quiet as I watched him rush around the room searching for clothes. There was no point in me saying-anything because he was going regardless.
“Get some sleep and I’ll see you in the morning”.
No kiss to the head this time. I rolled onto my side and switched the bedside lamp off. He was beating himself up about it, but it was an accident, no one was to blame.
A wolf came into our territory and something terrible happened. It was going to happen sooner or later. I was still unsure about why they needed the traps if people were patrolling constantly.
We had enough protection if anyone was to breach our land.
A sigh fell from my lips as I pulled the cover up and around my neck. There was nothing I could do but sleep and wait until it was morning.
