At a signal from Hortensia, two burly maids started toward Rebekah.
"Make her kneel outside! She's not allowed back in all night!"
As the maids reached for her, Rebekah pulled a can of pepper spray from her purse and let loose.
"Aah!"
Two piercing screams echoed through the room as the maids staggered back, clutching their eyes and collapsing to the floor.
Hortensia was stunned that Rebekah would fight back. Her rage boiled over. "Rebekah, you dare to resist?"
"Why should I be punished for something I didn't do?" In the past, Rebekah had endured everything out of respect for her as Hortensia. No matter how vicious the verbal abuse, she had let it go for his sake. But she wouldn't be so foolish anymore.
"Still denying it!" Hortensia shrieked, raising her hand to strike again.
"That's enough!" Old Mr. Forrester's voice finally cut through the chaos.
Hortensia froze, but her glare remained fixed on Rebekah.
The old man coughed violently, his face turning red. His health had worsened over the past few days, and he could feel his body growing weaker. There were things he needed to settle.
Once the coughing fit subsided, the butler helped him over to Rebekah. "Regardless, this is a matter between husband and wife. Why are you interfering?" he chided Hortensia. She started to protest, but a single sharp look from him silenced her.
"Rebekah, your grandfather believes you." Old Mr. Forrester's gaze was as warm and kind as it had always been.
Benjamin simply took Shawn's hand and led him toward Rebekah's room.
Rebekah had just stepped out of the shower, dressed in a silk slip. Her damp hair cascaded down her back, and her fair, clear face was veiled in a soft mist, making her look particularly vulnerable. The sight of her sent a jolt through Benjamin. He realized it had been a long time since they had been intimate.
When she saw them enter, Rebekah frowned. "Didn't I lock the door?"
"Mommy, we knocked but you didn't answer, so we used the spare key," Shawn explained.
Rebekah saw the desire in Benjamin's eyes and felt a wave of nausea. She grabbed a nearby blanket and wrapped it around herself, her posture defensive. "Get out," she ordered bluntly.
Shawn glanced up at his father, his eyes darting back and forth. "Mommy, Daddy has something to talk to you about."
