"Well, it makes sense," Chloe continued, her eyes scanning Rebekah's outfit. "Showing up in rags like this… you probably didn't get a dime in the divorce. How pathetic." She said the words, but there wasn't a trace of sympathy in her eyes.
Hearing about the divorce, even those who had shown Rebekah a sliver of respect now looked at her with cold indifference.
"Hey, Candice," someone piped up, "I always thought you and Benjamin were the real couple. He's always so good to you. Maybe he's been in love with you all along."
Candice quickly feigned embarrassment. "Chloe, what are you talking about? Benjamin and I are just good friends. If you keep talking nonsense, I might actually get mad at you."
"You might see him as a friend, but that doesn't mean he feels the same way."
Rebekah listened to them tease Candice, her face a mask of indifference.
Chloe, finding the conversation dull, waved her hand and brought a bottle of liquor to the table. "Alright, alright, we're here to have fun, not to gossip. Let's play a game of dares."
She laid the bottle on its side in the center of the table, her fingers resting on it. "I'll spin the bottle. Whoever it points to has to do a dare, and we'll all come up with it together."
"Sounds good!" everyone agreed.
Chloe spun the bottle, her eyes flicking from Rebekah to Victor, who was sitting to Rebekah's left. With a flick of her wrist, the bottle spun several times before coming to a stop, pointing directly at Victor.
"Look at that, Mr. President! Guess you're up first," Chloe crowed.
The group started hooting and hollering as Victor smiled at Chloe. "Alright, what's my punishment?"
Chloe propped her chin on her hand, pretending to think. "Okay, how about this… a ten-minute make-out session with the person to your right!"
The person to Victor's right was Rebekah.
She grabbed her bag to leave, but Candice caught her arm. "The game's not over yet, sister. Where are you going?"
The others quickly surrounded her, goading Victor.
"Come on, class president, are you a man or not? You can't even handle one little dare?"
"You couldn't get her in high school, and now you're backing down from a game?"
"What a wimp."
Stung by the insults, Victor's face turned grim. He lunged forward and grabbed Rebekah's wrist.
