"So after all that, you still want a divorce?" York asked Claudia.
Seeing his expression darken, Claudia pouted. "I already told you. Divorce me, and I'll trust you. I'll give you a chance to pursue me again. Is that so hard for you to accept?"
The waiter finished serving their food and left, and Hawley began to eat with focus.
York pushed the steak he had cut in front of Claudia, his face grim. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to."
He was willing to pursue her again, but he would never agree to a divorce.
Claudia stared at York for a long moment, feeling completely defeated.
Growing up, all she had ever seen were his good qualities.
He was tall, well-built, handsome, and intelligent. He was reserved and polite.
Though he was cold and spoke little, making him hard to get close to, it was precisely that noble, aloof air that had captivated her.
Only now did she realize that York was incredibly stubborn.
And it was only when it came to matters of the heart.
His defense of Ann was proof of that. And so was his grip on their marriage.
Noticing Claudia's silence, York softened his tone. "I'm going to Maronia tomorrow to negotiate a project. Is there anything you want me to bring back for you?"
Claudia looked him straight in the eye. "The best gift you could give me is a divorce agreement."
The two stared at each other from a close distance, and York's expression turned cold once more.
"We are still husband and wife, after all," he said. "It's not convenient for you to keep staying at your parents' house. After my trip and the shareholders' meeting, I'll come and get you."
Claudia put down her knife and fork. "Don't bother. I'll be filing for divorce next week."
York stared at her quietly for a moment.
Then his gaze fell on Hawley, who was sitting beside her.
"Did Hugh give you this confidence?" he asked.
Their eyes met, but Claudia didn't respond.
She didn't know if Hugh had the power to win this divorce case for her.
But she had to try.
At the entrance of the restaurant, Ann walked in with her son. Ethan James spotted York immediately. "Mommy, it's—"
