Claudia wasn't surprised that York would ask such a question. In his mind, he still didn't believe he had done anything wrong. His apologies, his concessions, his offers of compensation—they were all because she had terminated the pregnancy without telling anyone, and he had finally realized the severity of the situation. He was just trying to smooth things over, to keep their marriage intact.
She shot back, "First, you answer me: why are you kinder to Ann James and her son than you are to me, your wife?"
They stared at each other, and the light in York's eyes slowly dimmed. The sense of grievance he felt gave way to guilt. He managed a strained smile but couldn't force any words out.
"I've known Master Sayer for less than a year," Claudia said, "but if I so much as frown, he knows I'm tired. Even though he dislikes you, he'll watch over you so I can get some rest. When I smile and say I'm fine, he knows I'm putting on a brave face. He suggests we go racing just to help me relax. He lies on the sofa playing games, but his eyes are on me the whole time because he can tell I'm in a bad mood and he wants to keep me company."
She looked directly at him. "York, we've known each other for over twenty years. Do you understand me at all?"
York tentatively reached for her hand, but she pulled it away.
"I agreed to let Mr. Cyrus's son call me ‘Mom' because I've had a child, too, and I long for one. It's because I could feel the pure, innocent kindness that child offered me. I've been your wife for three years. As my husband, what have you ever done for me?"
York stumbled backward, not stopping until he hit the kitchen doorway.
"Mr. Cyrus and I were practically strangers, but I cared for his child and helped him heal, and in return, he showed his gratitude by breaking his own rules to take my divorce case. I did my best to treat Mr. Grant, and when my parents and I were being harassed by your grandfather and father, he stormed into the Ferguson estate to ensure my safety. They have been loyal and respectful to me. Shouldn't I be good to them in return?"
