Mr. Shaw struck Celia across the face. "Guards! Get this insolent thing out of my sight and out of this family!"
Claudia watched impassively as Celia was forcibly dragged away.
The Shaw family held a significant position among the elite of Capital City.
Mr. Shaw, one of five sons, couldn't have secured his position as the family head without a ruthless streak.
Though the Shaws were one of the eight great families, Mr. Shaw was noticeably humble and deferential in York's presence. "Mr. Ferguson, I apologize for my unruly daughter. Her upbringing has been lacking. I hope you and Mrs. Ferguson—"
Mr. Shaw caught his mistake and quickly corrected himself. "—I hope you and Dr. Watkins can find it in your hearts to forgive her this once."
Claudia glanced discreetly at York.
Celia's provocations alone weren't enough to get her thrown out of the Shaw family.
Ultimately, Old Mrs. Shaw and Mr. Shaw were doing this out of fear of York.
After accepting the new phone from the Shaws as compensation and exchanging a few pleasantries, Claudia declined their offer of a ride and stood to leave.
York bid farewell to Old Mrs. Shaw and intercepted Mr. Shaw at the door.
At the main gate, York held an umbrella over Claudia's head, blocking her path. "It's raining, you won't get a cab. I'll take you home."
Claudia stopped. "How did you know about the incident with Celia?"
Their eyes met. York looked down.
"Mr. Shaw was with me when Old Mrs. Shaw called him," he explained.
When Claudia didn't respond, York tentatively reached for her arm. "Get in the car. I'll give you a ride."
Just as she was about to push him away, a flashy sports car pulled up smoothly in front of them.
York's face darkened as he watched Rock Sayer get out.
Claudia pushed York aside and stepped under Rock Sayer's umbrella.
