After days of torment, Claudia finally felt a glimmer of hope for the future.
Just as her parents had said, it was only a divorce. It wasn't the end of the world.
She washed her face, determined to pull herself together. As she went to take out the trash, she recognized her younger brother Eddy's backpack lying on the floor by the door.
She searched the hallway, upstairs and downstairs, but he was nowhere to be found.
A sense of dread crept over her. She brought the backpack inside. "Dad, Mom, I think Eddy overheard us."
Jessica put down the plate she was holding and helped her husband untie his apron. "That stubborn boy... I hope he doesn't do something reckless."
A few minutes later, Claudia and her parents rushed out the door.
After years of financial hardship, Claudia's parents had changed. They were no longer the confident, powerful people they once were.
If York acknowledged them, they were the in-laws of a wealthy family. If he didn't, they were just ordinary people. They had no power, no influence. If something happened, they would be at the mercy of others.

It was just after seven in the evening at Claudia and York's city apartment.
York and Peter were talking in the living room when the doorbell rang. Darleen got up to answer it.
She saw Eddy storming in, looking furious.
"Eddy, are you here by yourself?" she asked, glancing behind him.
Eddy ignored her and marched into the living room. He grabbed a glass of wine from the coffee table and threw it in York's face.
As Darleen gasped, Eddy smashed the wine bottle on the table, brandished the broken neck, and lunged at York.
Peter jumped up and grabbed Eddy around the waist, prying the broken bottle from his hand. "Eddy, let's not do that."
