I wonder what Dawn's reaction would be if she saw this?
A strange gleam flashed in Micah's eyes. His long fingers rubbed against the screen, but he didn't send it.
...
When Ethan got home, Dawn and Hannah had already finished dinner. Hannah had gone out to walk the dog, leaving Dawn alone in the house.
She was sitting cross-legged on the couch in long-sleeved loungewear, holding a plate of cut fruit. She turned to look at him. "Didn't you say you had a business dinner tonight? How come you're back so early?"
Ethan walked over and leaned down to eat an apple from her plate.
"Who told you I had a dinner?"
"Tony."
Dawn speared another piece and popped it in her mouth, chewing twice. "He said you had a major client coming in today."
Ethan took off his suit jacket, sat down beside her, and pulled her close, his eyes signaling for her to feed him. "You just believe whatever anyone tells you? Next time ask me directly."
"Oh."
But Tony wasn't just anyone.
Dawn felt like something was off with him today, but when she looked closer, she couldn't pinpoint anything.
She fed him fruit.
One piece, two pieces.
She suddenly asked softly, "Don't tell me you didn't eat dinner?"
Ethan's expression didn't change. Then suddenly, he gripped her waist with both hands and lifted her up to straddle him. His breath still carried the sweetness of the fruit. "Mm, didn't eat. Starting now."
Dawn gasped as she was suddenly lifted, her surprised cry swallowed entirely by his kiss.
They made their way upstairs.
She wrapped her arms tightly around Ethan's neck, feeling like she'd fall if she wasn't careful. Between their tangled breaths, she felt like kindling meeting a flame, burning from the inside out.
The sky hadn't completely darkened yet. The glow of sunset spread across the entire sky.
The window made a stunning backdrop, creating a unique silhouette.
It was over an hour later when they finished.
Ethan ran a bath for Dawn. After she got dressed and came out, she immediately spotted him standing by the window.
His tall figure leaned against it, a lit cigarette in his hand. Dawn frowned. She didn't remember Ethan having a smoking habit.
Just then, Ethan looked up, casually stubbed out the cigarette, and tossed it in the trash. He took the towel from Dawn's hand to dry her hair, his voice still carrying a lingering huskiness. "Why didn't you call me?"
Dawn smiled. "To help me get dressed?"
"Of course."
He was completely serious, even giving her a "what are you thinking" look. "I'm at your complete service. Start to finish."
It sounded like a perfectly normal statement, but somehow it felt suggestive.
"And?"
"Her company has a project collaboration with us, so I can't avoid some interaction with her. If you hear anything from anyone else, come ask me directly, okay?"
He spoke seriously while Dawn listened in a daze.
She blinked and asked the key question. "So do you like her?"
"No."
"Then it's fine."
After Dawn said this, she released his face and flopped back, mumbling, "Normal work stuff is totally normal. I won't get mad, as long as there's really nothing between you two."
Soon, even breathing could be heard.
Ethan was speechless.
He helplessly pinched the bridge of his nose and smiled.
He leaned down to pull the covers over her.
Dawn's face still carried a lingering flush, making her skin look as delicate as a child's. Ethan gently tapped her forehead and murmured, "Can you pay a little more attention to your husband?"
This time she was sleeping too deeply to answer.
...
Dawn slept all the way until early morning. When she woke up, she vaguely remembered something. What had Ethan told her yesterday?
