Obedience No More He's the One I Deserved novel Chapter 331

No matter what happened, Roxanne could never let him go.

She ran her tongue lightly across her red lips and said with a smile, "I actually have plans tonight, but let's have dinner together tomorrow instead."

Ethan didn't respond. The tight movement of his throat showed he was holding back something deep—anger, exhaustion, maybe both.

Seeing that, Roxanne's grin only grew wider.

She left the office in a good mood, humming as she buckled her seatbelt in the backseat of her car. "Drive to the company," she said.

"Ms. West," said Jody, her driver and assistant, "Mr. West just called."

Roxanne's smile froze. Her face went pale. She took a slow breath before asking, "What did he say?"

Jody glanced into the rearview mirror and saw how drained she looked. "Mr. West said you've been ... getting too reckless lately."

...

Roxanne closed her eyes, her jaw tightening until the muscle twitched. She rarely showed this kind of vulnerability, and Jody felt a pang of sympathy. Adjusting his glasses, he added softly, "Mr. West also gave Mr. Brown some instructions. It might be best for you to keep a low profile for a while."

Roxanne's eyes snapped open. "Mr. Brown? Daniel?"

"Yes."

She gave a short, bitter laugh. "And what could he possibly ... "

Her words cut off. Her expression froze as something clicked in her mind. "Wait ... you mean Dad's people have been watching me? And now he's letting Daniel set me up?"

Jody said nothing.

Silence was as good as confirmation.

Roxanne's face turned paper-white. Her fingers tightened around her phone, rubbing it over and over again. She looked scared—completely lost.

After a long pause, she whispered hoarsely, "I didn't do anything wrong, did I? I did everything Dad asked. I opened the overseas market; I did my job. He has no reason to be mad at me."

Jody didn't reply. There was nothing to say.

In the Wests, Vincent's word was law.

If he said Roxanne had done wrong, then she had.

The car fell into heavy silence. Roxanne's face, already pale, took on a sickly tone—beautiful in a tragic, broken way.

...

Days without work were peaceful at first, but too much peace could rot a person from the inside out. After a while, your mind would start wandering, searching for somewhere to go and finding nowhere at all.

Dawn didn't have a job anymore, and her freedom was limited. She honestly didn't know what to do with herself.

She grabbed a book and sat in the garden, trying to read, but her mind refused to focus.

Eventually, she gave up and just lay back in the chair, eyes closed.
