"I can't stand you. That's all."
Roxanne froze for a second. "You don't care about Ethan?"
"He's not worth it. You can have him."
The room fell silent.
Roxanne licked her lips, at a loss for words. She stared at the face in front of her—hating it, yet feeling an unwilling flicker of ... envy.
Her face paled, then flushed. Looking down, she noticed her hands trembling slightly.
She quietly hid her hand behind her back and said in a hoarse voice, "Well, the invitation's delivered. Come or don't. Whatever."
She stood and left.
Her retreating figure looked almost like an escape.
Dawn sat on the couch. She felt completely drained.
It hadn't even been that long ...
And he was already getting engaged to her.
How serious was the dirt Roxanne had that even someone as proud as Ethan gave in?
Dawn closed her eyes, her delicate features tense.
Victor didn't come back until the afternoon. Luckily, Jonathan had been super busy the last two days. If he hadn't been, things might not have gone this smoothly.
"Ms. Porter."
He glanced around, then followed Dawn upstairs.
Once he was sure no one had followed, he lowered his voice. "I found something."
"Joe's brother, Maddox Kerrigan, has been working for Stonewarden Group for about 10 years. Rumor is, he handles shady jobs for the chairman. Professor Kerrigan tried to talk him out of it many times, but it didn't work. Once, he almost used a knife on Professor Kerrigan."
Some people are just born rotten.
The two brothers had the same mom, but they were total opposites.
"Also, Maddox was in Crestavia for a month three months ago. But no one knows where he stayed or what he did there. His movements were kept completely under wraps, probably not even Roxanne knows."
Dawn almost asked how he knew.
But then it hit her.
Victor still worked for Daniel, and Daniel worked for Stonewarden Group. Of course, he had his own sources.
She was almost sure now that the guy who sent those two notes to her was Maddox.
Which meant ... it was the chairman of Stonewarden Group?
Why would he do that?
Was it for Roxanne?
Just when Dawn thought she finally understood a bit more, everything turned confusing again. And Jonathan was also part of this somehow.
She still didn't know what role he played in all this.
Victor hesitated as he watched her rub her temples. "The news about Mr. Jackson is all over the internet. Do you want to see?"
Dawn paused, her voice low. "The engagement news?"
"Yes."
