Chapter 46

At this moment, the difficult journey finally ended at the hotel just as I was about to break down.

Just then, Leland’s phone rang repeatedly, but he hung up in annoyance. The missed calls showed that “Client C.H.” had called, along with a spam call.

But I knew that both of these phone numbers were Caitlyn’s.

Getting out of the car, I quickly said, “Okay, I’m here, and you can go back now. But Leland, can you take a taxi back? I want Johan to stay here so I don’t have to take a taxi to visit clients.”

Surprisingly, he nodded kindly.”I know you need the car. I asked my assistant to drive over. After all these years together, I know what you’re thinking.”

I glanced behind me. Not far away, Leland’s assistant waved hello to me, and I nodded back.

“Honey, you really understand me well. Okay, you can go back now; otherwise, I’m worried your client might come looking for you here.”

Leland thought I was joking. He pinched my nose and agreed easily, “Alright, call me if you miss me.”

“Mm-hmm.” I nodded, but as soon as he turned to leave, tears flowed down my face.

Denise came over to hug me, her voice trembling. “I can’t believe it. He has a new lover, yet he can face you so calmly? How can he act so well?”

I wiped my tears.”Let’s not talk about it, Denise. I’m almost collapsing. Every moment with Leland makes me feel like dying.”

Denise cried out, “No. Kaylie, you still have me. Don’t say that, it really hurts my heart.”

Johan also started sobbing, “Don’t cry, Ms. Perez. I will protect you with my life.”

I nodded gratefully.”Johan, Denise, thank you. I know it’s dangerous here. I even think Caitlyn might have Leroy here to kill me. I’m worried about bringing danger to you, but besides you, I have no family or friends left.”

The more I spoke, the sadder I felt. Maybe no one could understand the despair I felt at that moment.

That feeling reminded me of a video I once saw, of a six-year-old girl and her mother standing on a rooftop edge.

The mother was on the verge of breaking down, “I don’t want to live anymore. Life is too hard. I don’t want to live anymore. Daughter, I don’t want you to experience the pain of being a woman either. Are you willing to jump with me?”

The little girl nodded firmly. “Let me jump first, Mom. You’ll be afraid of the pain. I’ll jump first, then you jump. If you land on me, it won’t hurt as much. Anyway, wherever you go, Mom, I’ll follow you.”
