Yvonne followed Marico into the lounge, where they waited in silence until William finally arrived with an update.

“Mr. Hamilton, Linda’s coffee cup was tossed in the trash. It’s not easy to collect evidence, so this might take some time. The hospital just got back to us—they confirmed she had an allergic reaction. But it wasn’t the coffee. It was mango. Luckily, the hospital’s right next door. Any later, and she might have gone into full anaphylactic shock.”

Yvonne recalled how Linda, visibly struggling to stay upright, had still managed to accuse her earlier. It was hard to imagine Linda collapsing from an allergic reaction.

“Then go through all the trash—every piece. Test for DNA. Find out if someone put mango in her coffee, if she ate something herself, or if the whole thing was self-inflicted,” Marico ordered, his tone icy and commanding as he lounged in the armchair, an intimidating presence.

“What about the security cameras? Did you see anything unusual?” Yvonne turned to William.

“Nothing out of the ordinary. The only thing—Linda went to the restroom right before going on stage,” William reported.

Yvonne remembered that clearly. About ten minutes before they were supposed to head backstage, Linda had gone to the restroom, taking her purse with her.

“What about her bag?” Yvonne wondered aloud. Maybe Linda had eaten something with mango in it during that time.

Then she could have timed her symptoms to start just as she was about to go on.

“The doctors searched her things. Nothing linked to mango,” William replied.

“Nothing?” Yvonne had a theory forming, but William’s words left her deflated.

“I’m going to the hospital to check on her,” Yvonne said, already restless. She refused to just sit around and wait.

“I’ll get to the bottom of this. Go home for now,” Marico called after her.
