After having 400 milliliters of blood drawn, I felt a bit dizzy.
The nurse told me to rest, but I waved my hand and said, “I’m fine.”
Rhonda held my hand, tears streaming down her face. “Jessie, thank you.”
I pulled my hand back. “It’s what I should do.”
After all, he gave me life.
These 400 milliliters of blood are just my way of repaying him.
Nolan was wheeled out of the operating room, still unconscious.
The doctor said he needed to be observed for 48 hours.
Rhonda stayed by the hospital room, while Bernard handled company matters.
I was about to leave when Bernard stopped me. “Where are you going?”
“Back to school.”
“You just had blood drawn!”
“I’m not that delicate.”
He frowned. “Jessica, can’t you…”
I interrupted him, “Can’t stay and play the role of the dutiful daughter? Sorry, I can’t do that.”
“No one asked you to act!”
“Then what do you want me to do?”
I looked at him. “Stay in the hospital room, wait for him to wake up, then the five of us hug and cry together, and live happily ever after?”
He couldn’t say a word.
I sighed. “Blood ties can make me save his life, but they can’t make me love him.”

After saying that, I turned and left.
Behind me, Bernard called out, “Jessica, do you really not have any feelings at all?”
I stopped, but didn’t look back. “Feelings need to be nurtured.
Unfortunately, you never gave me the chance.”
Nolan woke up on the third day.
I was in class when I received a message from Rhonda: “Dad is awake, he wants to see you.”
I didn’t reply.
After class, Bernard was waiting for me outside the teaching building.
“He really wants to see you.”
“Oh.”
“Jessica!” He was a little angry. “You saved his life, he wants to thank you in person.”
“No need to thank me.” I walked around him.
He grabbed me. “What do you actually want?”
“I don’t want anything.”
I shook him off. “Bernard, can you all just stop interfering with my life? I saved him because I have RH negative blood, not because he’s my father. Do you understand?”
“How can you say something like that!”
I looked at him expressionlessly. “If a random stranger on the street needed RH negative blood, I would donate too. That’s called humanitarianism, not deep father–daughter affection.”
Bernard’s face looked terrible.
At that moment, my phone rang.
It was Nolan calling.
Bernard snatched the phone. “Dad, it’s Bernard. I’m with Jessie.”
I didn’t know what was said on the other end, but he handed the phone to me.

Chapter 14
I took it. “Hello?”
“Jessie…” Nolan’s voice was very weak. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I’m sorry.”
I was stunned for a moment.
“Before, we really favored Lenny and neglected you.”
He coughed a few times. “Dad was wrong.”

“Jessie, can you forgive Dad?”
I was silent for a long time. “Mr. Fraser, some things, once missed, are missed forever.”
“Please focus on your recovery.” I hung up the phone.
Bernard looked at me in disbelief. “He apologized, what more do you want?”
“I don’t want anything.”
I handed the phone back to him. “If apologies were enough, why would we need the police?”
