The first school break had arrived, and some parents were there to pick up their kids.
The parking lot was packed with luxury cars, parents waiting with flowers and gifts in hand
I slung my bag over my shoulder, ready to catch the shuttle bus back to campus.
“Jessica!”
I turned to see Rhonda standing next to a Bentley.
“I came to pick you up,” she said, walking over with a smile.
I hesitated for a moment. “Weren’t you supposed to take Lena to her follow–up appointment?”
Her expression grew a bit awkward. “We rescheduled it for tomorrow:”
Oh, so she changed the appointment just for me?
I didn’t buy it.
Sure enough, once I got in the car, I saw Lena sitting in the back seat, looking annoyed.
“Mom, didn’t we agree to go to the mall?”
“We’re picking up your sister first.” Rhonda replied.
“But-”
“Lenny.” Rhonda’s tone was sharper now
Lena pouted and fell silent.
So, they didn’t come just for me. I was just a stop along the way.
I leaned against the window and closed my eyes.
“Jessie,” Lena suddenly piped up. “you got a tan.
I ignored her.
“But it’s okay, I have some whitening serum. I’ll give you some when we get home.”

“No thanks.”
“Don’t be shy,” she said sweetly. “We’re family, after all.”
Family
Hearing those words from her was almost laughable.
When we reached campus, I stepped out and walked away immediately.
Rhonda called after me. “Jessie, come home for dinner tonight, okay? Your dad says he misses you.”
“I’m not coming.”
“But-”
I didn’t wait for her to finish, just walked straight onto campus.
Behind me, I heard Lena’s voice. “Mom, it seems like Jessie doesn’t like us.”
That’s right–I really don’t.
I don’t like your hypocrisy, your favoritism, or the way you treat me like a fool.
The day I returned to school, I received a package.
The sender–Lena.
Inside was a voice recorder and a note. “Jessie, give this a listen. I think you’ll like it.”
I pressed play.
Lena’s voice came through, clear as day.
“Mom and Dad are so clueless–they still haven’t figured out I’m just acting.
“Jessica has been acting all high and mighty. Isn’t she just after money?
“The first thing I’ll do when I marry into a rich family is kick her out.
“Heart problems? I’m perfectly healthy. I fake it for their attention.”
I froze.
It was definitely Lena’s voice. But why would she send this to me?

As I was confused. My phone rang. It was a call from an unfamiliar number.
“Ms. Fraser, did you listen to the recording?”
“Who is this?”
“Just a concerned friend.”
“Why did you send this to me?”
“Because I couldn’t stand it any longer,” she said. “Lena’s disgusting. She goes around trash- talking you, calling you a hick, saying you’re not good enough for the Fraser family.”
“So I made the recording.”
“She was drunk and spilled everything.”
I was silent for a while, then asked, “What do you want?”
“Nothing. I just can’t stand her. She’s a total fake, and yet so arrogant.”
After the call ended, I stared at the recorder.
This was an opportunity.
But I didn’t act on it right away.
