He remembered that in recent days, Carson had been particularly fond of visiting his aunt's house, saying he wanted to see the baby.
Beyond that, there was nothing else.
Just as Kevin hesitated over whether to bring this up with their great-grandmother and parents, Carson blurted it out himself. Puffing his cheeks, he said, "I heard Auntie and a pretty lady talking. The lady and Auntie are always nice to me, but Mom never likes me. She only cares about big brother and Shawn."
At this, Madelyn—the very aunt Carson had named—abruptly paled.
She was stunned, utterly bewildered.
She truly hadn’t expected Carson’s words to stem from her own conversations with Irene. Just moments ago, she had been smugly relishing the fact that Ariana’s own son didn’t favor her. Now, her face drained of color. Frantically, she turned to the family matriarch. "Grandmother, I never taught Carson such things! He must have overheard me talking with Irene."
It was true—Irene had been visiting the Stone Family household frequently lately, and the two of them had chatted often.
But they had rarely discussed the affairs of the third branch.
After all, this was the Stone Family residence—walls had ears. Even if she harbored grievances against Ariana, she knew better than to speak carelessly. As for Carson’s claims, it might have been from a passing remark Irene made a couple of days ago: 'If I have another child, I won’t neglect the twins the way Ariana does, only doting on the one in her belly.'
At the time, Madelyn hadn’t paid it much mind.
Now, it dawned on her—Carson must have overheard that. Desperate to clear herself in the old lady’s eyes, she quickly explained.
Once finished, she shot Ariana a frosty glare.
In her mind, this had to be Ariana manipulating her own son to frame her!
Yet she overlooked one crucial detail—Carson had also said that the lady and his aunt were kind to him. Madelyn *had* treated Carson and Kevin well, but only because they were Lambert’s sons. As for Irene, she had never witnessed the woman showing Carson any particular affection in private. So she assumed Carson had simply misspoken, attributing Irene’s kindness to her own.
But the family matriarch wasn’t so easily fooled.
However, since this was just a minor issue not worth escalating, the old lady responded with deliberate indifference, "From now on, don’t let just anyone into the Stone family." The lack of tact in the visitor’s words had clearly displeased her.
Madelyn was taken aback. Instinctively, she blurted, "Grandmother... that’s Irene Harper, she’s from the Harper family..."
After all, the Harper family hadn’t yet fallen from grace. Shouldn’t the old lady be pleased that the Harper and Stone families’ daughters-in-law got along so well?
Sure enough, upon hearing Irene’s name, the old lady’s expression shifted again. She frowned but this time held her tongue. Turning to Carson, she said sternly, "Enough now. Go home with your parents. How could they not love you? Stop making a scene, or even your great-grandmother will lose her patience."
Carson had always been the type to bully the weak but cower before the strong.
Seeing that even his great-grandmother wasn’t siding with him, his defiance crumbled into pitiful resignation. With a dejected pout, he shuffled over to Ariana.
Ariana’s long lashes lowered slightly, veiling the emotions in her eyes as she spoke in a calm, measured tone, "Let’s go." With that, she took Carson’s hand in one of hers and gestured for Kevin to join them with the other. Once the boy approached, she clasped both children’s hands and led them away without another word.
Lambert’s expression darkened.
The Harper Residence.
Chairman Harper was in a leisurely mood today, idly flipping through the newspaper in his living room. He was something of an oddity in their social circle—completely indifferent to business matters, yet married to an extraordinarily capable wife. What’s more, he felt no shame about it whatsoever. In fact, he took great pride in having his wife support the family.
Fortunately, the Harper family was influential enough that few dared to comment.
Even if they did, Chairman Harper’s temperament was such that he wouldn’t lose his temper. Truth be told, in all their years of marriage, he had hardly ever raised his voice at Kendra.
Not just because she was the backbone of the entire Harper family.
But also because of... a certain little secret he harbored deep in his heart.
Irene descended the stairs, her eyes lighting up the moment she spotted her father. She had always shared a special bond with him since childhood. To be precise, both she and Nathan were close to their father, while their mother's icy demeanor often left them intimidated. Naturally, their warm, cheerful dad was the more approachable parent.
Wrapping her arm around her father's, Irene blinked playfully and grinned. "Dad, you're home today? I thought you'd gone out."
The chairman cast an affectionate glance at his daughter and chuckled. "What, not happy to see your old man around?"
"Of course I am! Absolutely thrilled," Irene replied with a bright laugh.
Back when she was younger and more naive, she used to worry that her fun-loving father might bring home some illegitimate siblings. But as the years passed without any such surprises, her fears gradually faded, deepening her affection for him. Watching his sensible daughter, Chairman Harper's gaze momentarily grew distant, but he quickly snapped back to reality. Lowering his voice with uncharacteristic seriousness, he asked, "Irene, I've never asked you this before... Have you met any young man you like? If there's someone special, you can tell your dad."
