Irene was no longer that young anymore.
Not exactly old, either.
But Chairman Harper couldn't help worrying—if she married too late, there might be risks when it came to childbirth. With Kendra now managing the Harper family affairs so efficiently, he figured that even if his daughter chose a man who wasn’t the ideal match for a business alliance, as long as Kendra approved, he’d be fine with it too.
Hearing her father’s words, Irene’s face flushed instantly.
Noticing her reaction, Chairman Harper chuckled. "What? Is there really someone special?"
Irene’s cheeks burned even hotter.
She bit her lip, neither nodding nor shaking her head. But the shyness written all over her face was answer enough. Chairman Harper burst into laughter, his eyes crinkling with amusement. "Who is it? Bring him home so I can meet him. If your mother agrees, I won’t object."
Then, as if worried she might hesitate, he quickly added, "And even if she doesn’t approve, I’ll do my best to persuade her. Don’t worry."
A flicker of hope flashed in Irene’s eyes—
But just as quickly, it dimmed.
She glanced at her father, then lowered her gaze, her voice barely above a whisper. "It’s… it’s fine. There’s no need."
The shift in her expression was impossible to miss. Chairman Harper frowned. "What’s wrong? Did something happen? Did that man hurt you?" By the end, his tone had turned sharp, edged with something dangerous.
After all, this was the Harper family’s eldest daughter. Who would dare mistreat her?
Was this some kind of insult to the Harper Family?
Irene quickly shook her head, her eyes slightly red-rimmed. "N-no… It’s not like that, Dad. I just… I just don’t think there’s a chance for us anymore. Please, just drop it. I know what I’m doing..."
With Irene having spoken to this extent, Chairman Harper couldn't possibly ignore the matter.
His face darkened as he asked, "What exactly happened? How can I help if you don't tell me?"
Irene remained silent, her head bowed low. Tears slowly trickled down her cheeks.
The sight instantly tugged at Chairman Harper's heart. He let out a soft sigh and said, "Alright, tell your father. No matter how difficult it is, I'll see if I can help you. And even if it can't be resolved, a girl as beautiful and intelligent as you won’t lack for admirers."
This wasn’t just empty praise.
Though Irene wasn’t his biological daughter, her looks and grace were second to none.
That was something Chairman Harper took great pride in.
Of course, the most important reason was that she was Kendra’s child.
Seeing the earnestness in her father’s expression, Irene seemed unable to hold back any longer. Her eyes welled up, and she burst into tears. "Dad… He promised to wait for me, but in the end, he gave in to family pressure and married someone for an alliance. He even has children now. There’s no chance for us anymore."
Chairman Harper froze. "Children? He’s married?" His brows furrowed deeply.
Irene: "His wife bears a striking resemblance to me—about seventy percent similar. And her family background? Just a minor corporation. A few years ago, they even faced some turmoil. If it weren't for the Stone family's support, that White family probably wouldn’t even qualify as a minor corporation anymore." Her words were a subtle way of telling her father that this wasn’t a marriage of equals. It was a union between a powerhouse and a nobody—the latter practically negligible. In other words, Lambert’s wife brought absolutely nothing to the table in terms of family backing.
Chairman Harper was sharp; he grasped his daughter’s implication immediately.
He studied her for a moment before saying, "So, you want to marry him?"
Irene lowered her head. After a long pause, she replied bitterly, "I don’t know... He’s torn too. After all, his wife has given him three sons. The Stone family patriarch still disapproves of her, but for the sake of his great-grandsons, he can’t treat her too harshly." This was Irene’s indirect way of telling her father that Ariana was not favored by the Stone family’s patriarch.
If their marriage were to crumble, the old man might even welcome it.
As for how she knew Ariana still hadn't gained Old Mr. Stone's approval—well, that information naturally came from Madelyn. With Madelyn inside the Stone Family household, Irene was kept well-informed about most things happening there.
Chairman Harper nodded thoughtfully. "If you both genuinely like each other and the Stone family agrees, then I have no objections." A marriage alliance between the Stone and Harper families would indeed be advantageous for the Harper family. He truly hadn't expected his daughter to present him with such a pleasant surprise.
The only obstacle was those three children.
But then again, their birth mother was of no significant standing. If he and Old Mr. Stone could agree that any future son between Irene and Lambert would inherit the Stone family—
Well, if the old man consented, then this marriage would be more than satisfactory.
Chairman Harper smiled. "Alright, I'll sound out the Stone family in a couple of days."
Irene quickly interjected, "Dad—hold on. If you bring it up, the Stone family would certainly be pleased—after all, it's an alliance between our two families. But... it won't work. The woman Lambert married may not come from a prestigious background, but she's shrewd and ruthless. If she catches wind of this, she won’t let it slide."
