At this moment, Irene remained blissfully unaware that her earlier attitude had just cost her a potentially valuable collaborator.
Right now, she was exhilarated.
No—more accurately, she was downright gleeful.
After all, it wasn’t every day she got to see Ariana humbled, and the sight filled her with immense satisfaction.
Georgia watched the smile on her daughter’s face, her own heart swelling with warmth. Her eyes shimmered with maternal tenderness, as if she wished she could give Irene the entire world—anything to keep her this happy, carefree, and radiant every single day.
But then her thoughts drifted to the tangled web between Irene, Ariana, and Lambert.
A frown creased Georgia’s brow despite herself.
Ariana had undoubtedly severed all ties with her now, but that didn’t faze her. She had already found her true daughter. If Ariana chose to be ungrateful, so be it.
Yet there was one problem…
Ariana would never heed her advice again.
So how could she still help secure her happiness? It was clear that Irene still harbored feelings for Lambert, given her reluctance to marry anyone else. And Lambert was, undeniably, an exceptional son-in-law. She couldn’t just stand by and watch her daughter remain unmarried forever—she had to find a way to intervene.
…
After spending most of the day accompanying Georgia, Irene finally returned home.
Her buoyant mood was so palpable that even the household staff noticed.
As luck would have it, Nathan was home that day. Spotting his sister, he flashed her a warm smile. "You’re in high spirits today," he remarked. "Where did you go to have so much fun?" With Irene, he was, as always, the picture of a doting older brother.
Irene smiled faintly. "Just went shopping. Hmm? Brother, why aren't you at the company today?"
Meeting his sister's puzzled gaze, Nathan motioned for her to sit down. "I came back early. I was about to call you, thinking you'd return later. Who knew we'd be so in sync—you showed up just in time. Saves me the phone call."
Irene frowned. "You wanted me back? What's going on?"
Nathan's smile remained, though now it carried a brighter gleam. "Little sister, did you know Bran is coming to Z Country?" Bran Moore was Irene's ex-husband.
The Bran family had a long and prestigious history. His father currently chaired the Moore Group, a fortune so vast it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call him the wealthiest man in M Country. Bran's father was of mixed Asian and American heritage, while his mother was a Z Country native, giving Bran distinctly Eastern features.
He was formidable, having already taken over most of Moore Group's subsidiaries.
Among his generation, he stood as one of the most accomplished.
At the mention of his name, Irene froze momentarily.
Nathan continued, "He's coming to discuss a collaboration. Remember that project between our Harper Corporation and the Moore Group? It's significant enough that Bran is handling it personally." He paused, then added carefully, "Normally, I wouldn’t bring this up, but... if Bran is still interested, you could give it another shot. He’s definitely a better choice than Lambert, who already has four kids. And no matter how powerful the Stone family is, they still can’t compare to Moore Group’s wealth—they’re not even Z Country’s top fortune."
Just days ago, Nathan had been thrilled about his sister’s involvement with Lambert.
Had Lambert shown any lingering interest, Nathan wouldn’t have hesitated to help his sister remove the current wife from the picture, paving the way for their marriage.
After marrying Bran, his attitude toward her was neither warm nor cold—just polite detachment.
Not good, not bad.
But Irene couldn’t stand it. Time and again, she tried to win his affection, only to be met with indifference. In a fit of anger, she thought of her past love with Lambert and decided to divorce Bran.
And Bran? He was even colder. When she icily announced the divorce, he simply nodded in agreement—no joy, no sorrow, his expression as indifferent as always.
At first, she had worried her family would be furious about it.
What if the Moore Group terminated its partnership with the Harper family over this? But later, she learned that nothing had changed. Even after her divorce from Bran, the collaboration between Moore and the Harper Group continued as usual—as if her marriage had been utterly insignificant.
That was why Irene's expression turned so complicated when she heard Bran was coming to the country.
Of course, she wouldn’t listen to her brother and try to reconcile with Bran. If Bran had actually loved her, things might have been different—but she knew better. He never had. And since that was the case, she refused to cling to him any longer.
Nathan watched his sister’s resolute response with growing frustration. "Irene, I still think Bran is the better match for you. Who knows? Maybe he’s coming personally to discuss this project with the Harper Group just to see you."
Irene scoffed inwardly.
Impossible. No one understood Bran better than she did.
Her face remained expressionless as she pressed her lips together. "I told you—the only one I love is Lambert. Brother, are you saying you won’t help me?"
Under the icy weight of her gaze, Nathan quickly shook his head. "Of course not! I’m just speaking as your brother, thinking Bran might be better for you. But if you don’t want him, I won’t bring it up again."
